Experiencing extreme weather is not enough to convince climate change skeptics than humans are damaging the environment, a new study shows.
Political bias and partisan news reporting influence whether people report experiencing certain extreme weather events, the research suggests.
But Americans who lived in areas where a variety of extreme events were recorded -- flood, tornado, hurricane, and drought -- were ultimately no more likely to share the same beliefs about climate change as scientists.
The University of Exeter, University of Michigan and University of Texas research found that Republicans were less likely to report experiencing a polar vortex, while those exposed to liberal media were more likely.
Those who favoured liberal news sources such as the Huffington Post or the Daily Show reported experiencing drought more often than national weather data would suggest they actually did.
Dr Lyons said: "This research shows people's perception of extreme weather can be processed through partisan lenses. This means efforts to connect extreme events with climate change may do more to rally those with liberal beliefs than convince those with more conservative views that humans are having an impact on the climate. "However, it's important to note that we take a big-picture look rather than focus on specific events. Particularly intense events -- a 100-year flood or catastrophic hurricane -- might be most capable of influencing attitudes."

it in. it out.
The reason they call them 100 yr floods is because they are roughly periodic... we know this by looking at sediment cores...etc...an the periodic flooding extends far back before SUVs...
I’m 60. I’ve seen a lot of extreme weather.
I was born in northern North Dakota. 7500 years ago it was covered in ice a few miles thick. It melted. Maybe it was because of me, not sure.
I think it was Anne Coulter who pointed out that for liberals, history begins fresh every morning.
So they really can’t process the idea of cycles.
If we have 3 hundred year floods in one decade have we defined hundred year floods properly?
I know it was because of you :)
I love extreme weather.
OK!! Everybody pay attention!
Lesson for today:
1. The sun is 1,300,000 times as big as the earth.
2. The sun is a giant nuclear furnace that controls the climates of all its planets.
3. The earth is one of the suns planets.
4. The earth is a speck in comparison to the size of the sun.
5. Inhabitants of the earth are less than specks.
Study Question: How do less-than-specks in congress plan to control the sun?
There is a thing called statistics. If I flip a normal coin 5 times and get 5 heads in a row, does that mean the odds were not 50% of getting heads?
I remember growing up in the 60s and 70s when it snowed heavy and often here in PA.
They warned of a coming “Little Ice Age” and that things would get worse because of air pollution.
Wonder what happened?
They point to something that never happened before like it proves something. Every year, something happens that never happened before.
This April 12th was the hottest April 12th since they've been keeping records! The rainest June 6th on record!
Tell you what, the western states could really use some extreme weather right now. About 100’ of snow on the mountain tops would be a good start.
Experiencing extreme weather is not enough to convince climate change skeptics than humans are damaging the environment...

Why should my personal experience enter into the equation? What an unscientific way to think.
Science by anecdote?
Well, since there’s been (geologically speaking) somewhere around five previous ice ages and the last ice age has caused a period of warmth up to this day, I can only imagine that there’s probably going to be another Ice Age. Just as there has always been warming periods. The only difference is this time governments are trying to fleece taxpayers out of money to pay for this naturally occurring phenomena.
...and yes mankind is in the mix. but as Carl Sagan once said “Extinction is the rule, survival is the exception...” Perhaps we shouldn’t worry too much about us being around a million years from now. Because the odds are that we won’t be. That is if you believe in odds. And since we live on a Dynamic planet in a Dynamic Solar system, located in a very Dynamic universe... why does mankind have the audacity to think that they can predict anything out in the future with any kind of certainty? It’s beyond me, but if we are going to be fleeced out of money to pay for something that’s going to happen anyway... it might be time to get some buckets of that naturally occurring tar and some of those naturally occurring feathers and start employment on the illogical Grifters who always seem to be present during times when they can apply their craft. We can also use naturally occurring split rail fence Runners the haul ‘em out of town on once the tar and the feathers have been liberally applied.
Obviously the Earth has not experienced any extreme weather until recently.
experiencing extremist political rhetoric is not enough to convince some to accept cultural and social changes
