Kavanaugh Hearing Was The Democrats' Worst Nightmare
townhall.com ^ | Sep 28, 2018 | Mark Davis

In almost forty years of broadcasting and writing, I’ve spent a lot of time tracking the fates of the Republican and Democrat parties. In recent years, the main conservative thirsts have been for a more muscular and unapologetic conservatism and for the bright light of truth to be directed onto the darkest habits of modern leftists.

The election of Donald Trump has propelled us down a road featuring satisfying helpings of both. But on one stunning day, September 27, 2018, there arose Republican resolve like nothing in recent memory. The accompanying reputational suicide of several key Democrats tied a bow around a historic day for clarity.

The occasion was the totally unnecessary session of testimony by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and his main accuser of sexual misbehavior, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. The occasion was needless because Dr. Ford’s story in no way rises to the level of credibility to dislodge the nomination.

No decent society smears people for life based on high school misbehavior, so even if the wholly unsupported story were true, there would have been a strong argument against its relevancy today.

As such, the rhythm became: five minutes of Ms. Mitchell poking through questions of fact and memory, interrupted by five minutes of Democrat grandstanding. Then five more minutes of Ms. Mitchell seeming to inch closer to a salient point, only to be buzzered by the need to recognize the next round of Democrat fawning and prattling.

..snip..

But as soon as Judge Kavanaugh completed his opening statement, it became clear what the afternoon matinee would contain: Republicans showing more spine than they have in years, accompanied by Democrats making total asses of themselves.

Agree.

It also wiped out Democrat’s so-called frontrunners for 2020.

Spartacus? Complete joke and moron.

Harris? Superior acting hair weave witch.

Dems have nothing. No ideas. No bench. Zippo.

That is the exact scenario I’ve believed since this started. She experienced the event, but with a whole different cast of characters.

What I’m not clear on, though, is why she would have manufactured the fake memory in 2012 when O was prez? Why did JK’s name arise in couple’s therapy? There was no way to know at that time he would be a SCOTUS candidate.

I would also not be surprised to learn that she had an abortion or two and that’s why she has gone to such lengths to keep JK off the court. This info was suppressed.

The instant I heard that voice with the fake quivering, then watched it pass only to re-emerge, I thought “STAGED AND REHEARSED.”

Blasey-Ford’s high-pitched, halting, 10 year-old child’s voice was both clearly overdone, and creepy.

She was well coached by her lawyers to present an innocent, little girl personae. The voice and manner of speaking were designed to illicit sympathy. I have to admit, hearing her on the radio, I was certain most people would be convinced of her authenticity.

The truth is no one came out well from this absurd spectacle.

Absolutely. Even though he will likely be confirmed, there were only losers yesterday. The emotional appeals by Ford "won" with a few people who were already on her side (prejudged that she was 100% truthful). The strong emotional appeal by Kavanaugh "won" with people who were already on his side. For everyone else it is a loss. The stain on his reputation will never go away just like we saw with Clarence Thomas.

A "Kirov event" sent me searching. From the Library of Congress...

REPRESSION AND TERROR: KIROV MURDER AND PURGES

The murder of Sergei Kirov on December 1, 1934, set off a chain of events that culminated in the Great Terror of the 1930s. Kirov was a full member of the ruling Politburo, leader of the Leningrad party apparatus, and an influential member of the ruling elite. His concern for the welfare of the workers in Leningrad and his skill as an orator had earned him considerable popularity. Some party members had even approached him secretly with the proposal that he take over as general secretary.

It is doubtful that Kirov represented an immediate threat to Stalin's predominance, but he did disagree with some of Stalin's policies, and Stalin had begun to doubt the loyalty of members of the Leningrad apparatus. In need of a pretext for launching a broad purge, Stalin evidently decided that murdering Kirov would be expedient. The murder was carried out by a young assassin named Leonid Nikolaev. Recent evidence has indicated that Stalin and the NKVD planned the crime.

Stalin then used the murder as an excuse for introducing draconian laws against political crime and for conducting a witch-hunt for alleged conspirators against Kirov. Over the next four-and-a-half years, millions of innocent party members and others were arrested—many of them for complicity in the vast plot that supposedly lay behind the killing of Kirov. From the Soviet point of view, his murder was probably the crime of the century because it paved the way for the Great Terror. Stalin never visited Leningrad again and directed one of his most vicious post-War purges against the city—Russia's historic window to the West.

Yes, it would not surprise me much to find that is the point where the Dems now find themselves. But they probably need to wait until they capture the presidency next.

Watching Lindsey morph into a rabid conservative has been interesting. I believe he has been wanting to change his job title, to Attorney General and what better way than to become the staunch defender of PDJT. After yesterday, I think it is a brilliant idea.

He will repay these un-American pigs by not ever drifting away from Constitutional principles. For instance, he will be more than ever inclined to overturn such unconventional precedents such as Roe v Wade. That should be more than enough payback.

I don’t think most conservatives really want to face that. It involves a lot of “working that which is unseemly”. There’s a documentary called The Gift, if you are brave. Otherwise, you may simply assume the very worst your imagine can conjure.

If the GOP had any balls this charade woulda never started

Sure it was a charade, but it was the best of two lousy choices. The other choice was to ignore Ford. That would have greatly motivated Dem voters. Of course they are still motivated following the charade. Their mantra is still "believe the woman" But what worked yesterday was Kavanaugh's five or six point defense of himself (since nobody would do it for him). That defense, in all reasonable estimations, was successful. Had he not had this hearing he would have had a much narrower platform for his defense (Fox news perhaps). Then a close vote (it will still be close) and bad optics by ignoring the woman.

Don't ever forget whose fault this is, 100%. No, 1000% It is not Grassley or anyone else on our side.

Ford was truthful, however, about one thing. Her motivation for coming forward now vs 36 or 20 or 10 or 1 year ago. Ford said that she came forward now because Kavanaugh was about to be confirmed to the Supreme Court.

She "came forward" (i.e. made it up) in 2012.

Back during the Clinton impeachment, Lindsey Graham and James Rogan were, in my mind, the two best House Managers during the Senate proceedings. Back then, Graham showed the same statesmanship he showed for Kavanaugh.

[Ford experienced the event, modified it with a Kav-specific character set]

I think the fake part of the real memory is merely details filled in to make it work for Ford in a way to minimize chances of her falling apart at the hearing, and maximize chances of her appearing credible. This might go some way to explain aspects such as why they used 2012, keeping out JK's name from therapy. The latter, perhaps part of keeping things vague that would not fall apart if scrutinized closer.

I believe they were partially successful. They did rivit their 'Rat base, their 'Rat base believed Ford, not Kav. They think their base was energized, in a depressing/defeated way, for the mid-terms.

But, they apparently did not raise enough cover to win over Flake/Murky/Collins/etc. And we are more energized, in a positive way, for the mid-terms.

The ordinary libs (outside of the media and pure fanatics) are depressed about yesterday. I can see that on the lib forums. I'm not sure what effect it will have on the midterms, if any. Just the same as we'll never know what effect there would be in any particular alternative universe (e.g. more aggressive treatment of Ford, ignoring Ford and voting anyway, etc)
