The crack discovered Tuesday in a steel beam that supports the roof garden of the new, $2.2 billion Transbay Transit Center — forcing the terminal’s abrupt closure just as rush-hour was getting going — is the latest headache for the 2 1/2 block long transit hub.

My heart bleeds for these pathetic fools.

And the funny thing is, they think they're really smart and you're really stupid.

Dunning-Kruger Effect.

“We will be working tonight and tomorrow morning to get a better understanding of the cause of the crack.”

They're in luck, there are thousands of crack experts in San Francisco!

From the story:

6:10 p.m.

A San Francisco transit official says workers discovered a crack in a steel beam at the city’s celebrated new transit terminal as they installed ceiling panels.

After further inspections, Transbay Joints Power Authority Executive Director Mark Zabaneh says officials decided Tuesday to immediately close the $2.2 billion center.

Zabaneh says the crack is near a weld on a stress-bearing beam. He said he did not know how long the crack was.

Zabaneh says inspectors will be working at the building throughout the night to assess whether it is safe for people to return. He does not believe the problem is related to a sinking condominium building next door.

The center opened in August after nearly a decade of construction. Zabaneh said American steel was used for its construction.

and...oversight is really flimsy, if an inspector says anything about false or misleading mill certs he would just dissapear and get replaced.

they typically will start out with US steel as project specs require, then start slipping in the chinese junk with fake mill certs in the shipping documents, ( don't ask me how I know, I have busted them many times and got re-assigned each time )

How come our idiotic “elites” can’t even seem to competently manage the construction projects that were easily built int the 1950’s and even before ?

When the bay Bridge collapses the golden Gate will still stand

When the Millenium tower craters the Trans America Building will still be there

The old stuff was built with mild steel, reinforced concrete, graph paper, slide rules. The new stuff they have all the advanced software and materials, and they can’t even build pedestrian bridges ?

Because the people who built those things were honest and had character.

They're held up by more than steel.

It looks like they were trying to make art, rather than a building that would stand up for a long time.

Because our neo experts are so much smarter than their forbears that they don’t need so much engineering margin. Saves lots of money for graft anc corruption too.

but most likely cause is a wacky grandiose architectural design that sacrifices structural integrity

Story reads more like a shrinkage crack. Oversize weld passes? Insufficient preheat?
