Stephen Hicks: Nietzsche Perfectly Forecasts the Postmodernist Left (video)

For those of you unfamiliar with Stephen Hicks, he is a professor at Rockford College (Illinois). He is an authority on Post-Modernism and is often cited by Jordan Peterson when Peterson speaks of Post-Modernism and/or Nietzsche.

This somewhat short video is interesting because, in it, Hicks describes a little bit about how socialism and socialist resentment of capitalism/free markets evolved into Post-Modernism that we see today. In other videos I have seen he also describes how Marxism has evolved into Post-Modernism.

His basic point is that socialism (based on old socialist writings) exhibited a resentment toward capitalism whereas Post-Modernism literally seethes with a hatred of capitalism and embodies a fervent love of deconstructionism. Deconstructionism is exactly as it sounds. It is the polar opposite of construction and is focused on the destruction of Western culture.

I post this video because I think it is timely in illustrating how Post-Modernists attack conservatives and Western culture in general by slandering our values and core beliefs (i.e. the things we hold to be most important). And they are absolutely rabid in their attacks and don't care whether such attacks are based in truth or not.

In fact, considering that the Post-Modernists don't believe in objective truth (reality and morality are fluid and relative to Post-Modernists), they can and do fabricate "facts" used to attack conservatives.

This hatred of the West and conservatives and capitalism and our values in general is at the heart of the attack on Judge Kavanaugh.

The Democratic Party is no longer comprised of "Democrats"...it has been overtaken by Post-Modernists. It (the Party) no longer just opposes conservatives. As is visible for all to see, it is trying to destroy us.

Here is an excerpt/transcription from the video (keep in mind that Professor Hicks is speaking extemporaneously, so his sentences may be incomplete or run-on):

The Western tradition that prides itself on its commitment to equality, justice, open mindedness, making opportunity available to all…the West is proud, full of itself, confident, and it knows it is the wave of the future. This is unbearable to someone who is totally invested in an opposite and failed outlook…and so that pride is what you want to destroy. Your best bet then is to attack the West’s sense of its own moral worth. Attack it as racist and sexist then…as inherently dogmatic and cruelly exploitative. Undermine it at the core. The words don’t have to be true in order to do their damage and so I don’t think it’s accidental that post-modernism has launched the kinds of attacks on the core values of the West and it’s done so knowing full well that the accusations that it’s making are not true. It’s a psychological compulsion in some cases and so that allows you to hold the contradiction [in that] you can be an absolutist [in your assertions] and [at the same time, relativist in your belief system]...and it just doesn’t matter as long as you are harming someone—your enemy—that’s fine.

BTW, forgive me for capitalizing the term Post-Modernism. I know it isn't a proper noun. That said, I have come to see it as so damned important (as the enemy of all things civilized and decent) that I have developed a habit of capitalizing it.

Thanks for the write-up, and I agree. To see how it works in Democrat politics, listen to the Beast’s interview with Rachel Maddow - everything she says is a deconstruction of the truth.

...Stephen Hicks: Nietzsche Perfectly Forecasts the Postmodernist Left...

As far as oppressive control of the population by an elite ruling class, it more like two George Orwell Dystopian novels. He nailed them.

Awesome and accurate. I’m very surprised a college in Illinois hired him.

Both postmodernism and socialism are nihilism. Socialism is an assault on and destruction of the institutions required for a proper division of labor economic system. Institutions like freedom, private property, free market price system, profits, freedom of competition, inequality, saving and capital accumulation, and pursuit of individual self interest are destroyed.Destruction of division of labor economic system leads to decrease in total productive ability, economic decline/decay, impoverishment, and misery/suffering.

And the above is precisely why there’ll be bloodshed within our borders sooner/later.

One of the best treatises on this matter is Erich Heller’s -The Disinherited Mind.
It was written a half-century ago, but Heller—though he died an atheist—exposes what is so dangerous about existentialist thinking. Namely, that its adherent’s tend to promote a view of Truth as being NOT objective, but subjective, and thus—like a goal post—moved around to suit which ever group has the POWER instead of the RIGHT, to move it.

Had never heard of Hicks before, but watched this video. Then after watched a video that showed up on the sidebar called “Jordan B Peterson: How to End Postmodernism”. I’ve watched it before, but I’m a slow learner. This time much more of what Peterson said made sense. Lightbulb went off. I love these types of moments.

I’ll admit I’ve been intellectually lazy for awhile..not thought too much or too deeply about why this world has gone off the rails lately. These videos helped clarify it.

He's not wholly wrong, but deconstruction died out around the time Derrida did. I don't think Derrida and his generation of deconstructionists were "gleefully dismissing" Shakespeare and other Western artists. That is more a product of the race/gender/class theorists.

The other problem with talking that way is that post-modernism and deconstruction were also very much products of modern Western culture, even of modern Western capitalism. Non-western cultures aren't so self-critical or self-hating. The West hasn't been self-confident for some time now.

Post-modernism's relationship with capitalism is more complex than you get from the lecture. It thrives on affluence and variety and wouldn't make much sense in a poor, traditionalist culture.

Figure out what ‘progressives’ pride themselves on ... and attack them on what they care about.

It’s time to STOP playing defense...
