Hurricane Florence generating enormous waves up to 83 feet high
The Virginian-Pilot ^ | 9/12/18 | staff

Posted on 09/12/2018 9:45:20 AM PDT by gandalftb

Wave heights to 83 ft were measured early this morning by satellite altimeter under the northeast quadrant of Hurricane Florence. These enormous waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion.

Some strengthening is forecast through Wednesday night, drawing energy from the warm water. Its winds could approach Category 5 strength, which means winds of 157 mph or higher.

HAHA, I survived a couple typhoons when stationed on a 95' patrol boat in the South Pacific. Nothing like feeling good and eating as much food as you want because everyone else can't stomach a cracker:)

Definitely survival of the fittest when the ocean is in charge but I loved every minute of it.

“A fact not known to many is the highest wave ever recorded struck in Trinidad on December 31, 1913. Lighthouse Keeper, Fred Harrington, was performing his duties in the lighthouse perched 196 feet above sea level during a ferocious winter storm. As he turned to wipe the lantern room windows, he observed “a sea of unusual height”. In his words, “ The sea itself fell onto the top of the bluff and struck the tower on a level with the balcony, making a terrible jar.” The spray flew forty feet above the crest. The lens was thrown off level by the wave but the plucky Mr. Harrington had the light back in operation in a half an hour. Harrington also recorded observing waves crashing over nearby Pilot Rock (103 feet) - known as “a perfect 10 over Pilot” these days.”

It was not Galveston - it was somewhere down around Biloxi

To quote Jimmy Buffet - if you are gonna get blown away - get blown away

They keep hyping these things more and more so you will tune in Fox or CNN

Here is a buoy that you can call up that is about right in the path of the storm.

Check this link tomorrow early.

“Somebody ought to tell her about the folks who had decided to have a Hurricane Party in Galveston when Camille hit.”

Lots of people in Gulfport will be surprised by this.

If the waves are 83 feet in the open ocean, won’t they typically increase in size when they get to shore?

You always have the chance of encountering a rogue wave which will be much higher than the others. - Tom

Project MaxWave was created by 11 organizations from six EU countries to investigate rogue waves. Using two European Space Agency satellites, the project used radar to map the surface of the oceans over a three-week period. During this period, 10 massive waves were identified, all over 82 feet in height. Several were nearly 98.4 feet in height, from crest to trough.

Fear is being 19 years old on the main deck, in our shop,32 feet above the water line looking STRAIGHT UP at waves topping the 05 level. Ready for typhoon but can still hear things breaking loose.
FEAR turns to TERROR when 2 of our Chiefs, WWII vets come into the shop wearing LIFE JACKETS.

Do those kids have a dad? If so, where the heck is he?!

If so, I'm guessing that there are two sets of grandparents racing down there now to rescue their grandkids.

The only time I was seasick was when we skirted Super Typhoon Omar in the South China Sea. Same winds, same rollers, green water over the bow...

And the seas rose up against the heathen leftists and washed clean the lands of the deep state Obamites.

Only the righteous with red necks, those who love Zion, were spared and knew the skills of how to flourish in the midst of the wrath of the divine.

And so there is no blue wave of the heathen, only the wave of righteous Zion, 55 cubits high , assuring the purification of the land of rainbows.
