China rising: Beijing’s navy may deploy four aircraft carriers by 2022

The Chinese are rapidly building a world-class navy that, by 2022, could include as many as four aircraft carriers, according to current estimates.

Already, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) has fielded a pair of carriers: The Liaoning, a Soviet-era vessel that the Chinese spent many years refurbishing and which now serves primarily as a training ship; and the Type 002, which is currently undergoing sea trials and has yet to be named. There is a third carrier, the Type 003, under construction at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, and there are “credible reports of a fourth ship of the same class” that is being built at a shipyard in Dalian...

They can build them faster and a lot cheaper than we can.

Yes, and we’re paying for them to do it.

Half of these Navy vessels are the result of Bill Clinton allowing (encouraging?) China to steal technology, and the other half is American corporations setting up shop over there and enriching them where they can afford to do this.

Thanks a lot girls.

We used to build them fast and cheap. We could build a lot of them this way.

We've forgotten an important rule in military assets: Don't ever build something you can't afford to lose.

We can't afford to lose an aircraft carrier and this factors in to how we use them which is to say, "avoid risk."

That's no way to fight a war.

Keep in mind that building a carrier and operating a carrier are two different things.

But money does make up for some of that.

Yes, but how diverse are its crews, and do they use green fuels?

As your gonads are slowly roasting over an open fire ALWAYS remember the maker of most everything government is done by the LOW BIDDER.

So one most always has time to figure something out...

These Carrier Admirals make the same mistake as their Battleship forbears did. For the reasons you state.

We can't lose these 100,000 Ton Nuclear Powered Ships.

Seems to me as if an aircraft carrier nowadays is much more vulnerable to countermeasures than those of fifty years ago. They’re ideal for projecting power against nations that haven’t got access to those countermeasures, but not against an enemy that has parity in force.

Which aircraft carrier had a crewman, uh, crewwoman give birth to a baby onboard while on deployment last year?

Instead of a serious examination of the absurditity of the situation, the Navy brass applauded and diapers and formula were choppered in.

If you've ever dealt directly with Chinese manufacturing, you'd know that we might not have too much to worry about. Their poor reputation is well-deserved.

We can't afford to lose an aircraft carrier

We have 11 major carriers. The rest of the world has 4.

A reduction gear with Harbor Freight standards would be funny to watch from a distance.

So, four Chinese aircraft carriers?????? They should be christened the Kaga, Soryu, Akagi and the Hiryu. As befits their future success in combat.

Big targets in a small pond. Their Navy cannot operate effectively beyond the South China Sea, they are lacking hundreds of years of experience.

The CV(N) is only good as the repair/construction factories are to support them. China has many dry drocks, steel and industry to support a huge navy. We do not.

A navel war is won with good damage control and good repair facilities. We sink 4 then they build 25. We have ONE drydock to both repair and build CVNs. What a joke. Thanks Free Traitors™.

Wonder what the Chinese translations of those names are?

Those Chinese carriers might hope to do half as well as those earlier tubs.

Um no. The USA has ONE facility to build and repair CVNs in Norfolk VA. ONE!
