Botham Jean's door unlocked, lights were off when Officer Guyger mistook his apartment for hers

The Dallas police officer who killed 26-year-old Botham Jean in his own apartment got inside because the door wasn’t locked, a law enforcement official said Sunday.

Officer Amber Guyger had just ended a 15-hour shift when she parked on the wrong level of the South Side Flats garage— the fourth floor instead of the third, where she lived, according to the official who has direct knowledge of the case but is not authorized to discuss it publicly.

Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings also said Sunday that Guyger parked on the wrong floor.

She went to the door she thought was hers but was one floor too high. The four floors of the South Side Flats in the Cedars look the same, with concrete floors and tan doors. A light fixture to the side of each door displays the apartment number.

Guyger, 30, was arrested Sunday on a manslaughter charge and was booked into the Kaufman County Jail. The Texas Rangers are investigating the case at the request of Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall. In the last year, juries have sentenced two police officers in Dallas County to prison time after convicting them of murder.

The night of the shooting, Guyger didn’t notice that Jean's door had a red doormat in front of it, the official said. Her entrance didn’t have one.

Believe which version you want....

Rawlings told reporters Saturday afternoon that Guyger was able to get inside
Jean’s apartment because the door was open. But that claim was contradicted
Saturday evening by a FOX 4 reporter who cited police as saying Guyger
was on the wrong floor and the door was closed.

“Her key didn’t work in the door,” Steve Eager wrote. “Shooting happened
shortly after resident opened his own door.”

What would happen if a normal citizen did this. Did she notice that the furniture was not herse?

I thought the dumbass had been drinking? You mean she was sober? Wow, that’s affirmative action for you. I can hardly wait for the next batch of air traffic controllers.

I don’t understand, though, did she think she left her door unlocked? Or did she think someone had broken in and left it unlocked? Why didn’t she yell “Police!” as she entered or called for another officer first? This is stupidity on a whole new level.

So much does not pass the smell test. I read on another site that this is an area with an above average crime rate so I have trouble believing Botham left his door open with all his lights off.

If she walked in and heard someone wouldn’t it be better to run out of the apartment?
Was she shooting in the dark? If not and she turned on the lights didn’t she notice the furniture was not her’s?

He had a red mate in front of his apartment. She did not. The apartment number was lighted next to the door.

She must have been drunk, high or distracted; talking on her Bluetooth cell phone.

Police officer doesn’t notice red door mat at “her” door that wasn’t there before? And according to lock demonstrations I’ve seen, it flashes red if wrong key fob is inserted. Plus it was dark yet she managed to shoot him twice in chest? Too bad she wasn’t as accurate noticing that door mat.

I doubt that as she had just finished a twelve hour shift.

Levels could be painted different colors. At least a color stripe or colored markers or colored numbers for each level.

I wonder if she was texting while she parked and texting as she walked to her apartment.

a twelve hour shift

Correction:
Article says 15 hour shift. But I thought I read another that
said 12. That would make sense full shift plus 1/2 of another.

Does anyone know Guyger’s ethnicity. In the photo in the article it appears she is mixed race at the minimum.

It would be interesting if any of the residents come forward to say if they’ve ever gone to the wrong door. That should be something her attorney should investigate.

I used to be a drunk and if I had an "exceptional" night, I would get in the wrong bedroom in my apartment or get into the wrong car.

Nineteen years sober now.
