It worked good. Illegal is illegal and the small number of people that used and abused were a distinct minority of losers. Now, it's mainstream and destroying families and lives. My youngest brother being one of the victims. As well, look at the mess it is making.

The problem started with the whole BS of medicinal pot, an end run around the laws and playing on emotions. Absolutely zero medical benefit. No surprise.

The 'grow up' check on this is companies still test and won't hire, can't insure, people that use pot. Just because it is legal doesn't make it right or good choice. For those in public housing, etc., pot use is dead end as well.

It is all messy and will take time to fix. A generation will be lost in the process, like my brother, thinking that now that it is legal, it is a good thing. It is not.

Legal but no gun ownership/purchase if you use pot. No jobs. It is funny to read that even the pot farms and dealers drug test and don’t hire pot users. That says a lot about it.

They will regret it. Even people in Colorado are and Washington are discussing backtracking. And it is not like alcohol. Yes, alcohol gets abused, but on minor use it flushes out and is gone—challenge, like pilots, is to quit 8 hours before work. Pot no such luck, it stays in your system for weeks and months. And pop users are more likely to be unable to function in society. It is diabilitating.

Where is a good summary or short history on China’s collapse vis-a-vis drugs?

I have never smoked weed, and my alcohol intake is less than one drink a month socially. So ban or no ban has no effect on me. I just do not like the enormous tax payer money spent on enforcing weed laws...from the arresting cops to courts to prisons. I would prefer if people were free to indulge in any intoxicating stuff so long as it was done in the privacy of their homes and they did not drive UI and hurt others in which case they should get a very stiff prison term.

I mirror your experience and view, but also think about the consequences. Those that use pot, can't function, can't work, turn to crime for their habits. I don't buy the gateway drug claims that some have. Pot is enough for lots of folks. And the downside is the rest of us have to pay for it. Support for these people, government and/or family, the impact of their use is costly and bad. There is no upside to pot use. Again, as I noted in a previous comment, even pot producers and sellers won't hire and want nothing to do with users except to take their money.

It is not me that I was talking about but an Iraqi war veteran. He is prescribed medical marijuana in his state of Louisiana for PTSD. You can address your heroin suggestion to the physicians there.

I know weed helps with chemo nausea and I’ve seen that in my immediate family

Seizures for kids

It’s quite a drug actually

Downside is couch lock

Seen that too..lol......but as far as intoxicants go couch lock is fairly mild

I disagree for the same reasons people don’t buy tobacco and booze from they guy down the street. Convenience, reliability and safety.

As for the drug war, I don’t think it will end anytime soon. I just don’t think weed will be a part of it for long, at least on the federal level. Too much money changing hands in the quasi-legal trade, and too many people think it should be legal.

Many other characteristics of such drug defenders can reliably be made based on their mindset. Count on them being hyper-libertarians, approving of open pornography (just look away,) same-sex “marriage” or at least “civil unions,” and probably abortion. I know the type well.

Also, open borders. Libertarians believe we should have the “liberty” to go wherever we wish, without papers. Foreigners would obviously have the same freedom.

I am amused.

Opium started out legal in China, and remained so until prohibited in 1637. So opium was banned during the rise of addiction in the late 1700s and into the 1800s =>

The British forced open their ports with warships, and started importing tons of the stuff from India. China fell into a deepening spiral of addiction, and collapsed.

First real world experiment on the idiocy known as legalized drugs.

It turned out bad. Really bad. So bad I don't think people grasp how bad it was.

Rather than saying the right side of history, I should have said the inevitable side of history.

Getting high too often on any substance is wrong. With the possible exception of a double shot of George Dickel after a hard day.

Marijuana is soon to be the law of the land, with all the bad effects of overuse by a few.

Legalization is far better than jailing our many friends and family and associates that choose to use it.

That’s the madness that needs to end.

Your point is well taken.

Any sensible observer can see political trends.

Whether you choose to use or not, getting high is a reality by a large minority of voters.

Voting to legalize is a reality by the majority of voters. Get over it, let the majority rule.

“No, you’re the stupid one. As usual, you aren’t knowledgeable enough or smart enough to even comprehend what I said to you.”

You know DiogenesLamp, I for one am often offended by your immature name calling and insults.

You have decent knowledge of events. You don’t need to insult others to make your point, you accomplish just the opposite.

Let’s have an adult and considerate conversation.

It would be one thing if it were possible for drugs to be used in absolute isolation from the interconnectedness of the world. But high people frequently go out into public.

Public intoxication is against the law almost everywhere.

It's probably a good idea, but is legalizing pot going to make potheads move to other drugs?

I see a parallel with gay marriage -- is it going to make gays act more like married heterosexuals or do "queer" people move on to more extravagant ways of expressing themselves?
