A federal appeals court on Tuesday said printing “In God We Trust” on U.S. currency is constitutional, citing its longstanding use and saying it was not coercive.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Paul, Minnesota rejected claims by 29 atheists, children of atheists and atheist groups that inscribing the national motto on bills and coins violated their First Amendment free speech and religious rights.

A bit of good news. The ruling was 3-0.

And a little history, from Wikipedia:

"In God We Trust" first appeared on the two-cent piece in 1864 and has appeared on paper currency since 1957. A law passed in a Joint Resolution by the 84th Congress and approved by President Dwight Eisenhower on July 30, 1956, declared "In God We Trust" must appear on American currency.

This phrase was first used on paper money in 1957, when it appeared on the one-dollar silver certificate. The first paper currency bearing the phrase entered circulation on October 1, 1957. The 84th Congress later passed legislation, also signed by President Eisenhower on July 30, 1956, declaring the phrase to be the national motto.

Why would an actual atheist care?

They’re not atheists.

as I’ve said before, it’s not enough for atheists’ to have the right to NOT believe, they don’t want anyone to be able TO believe. Straight out of hell IMO.

If venerability and coercion are deciding factors, then this decision gives leverage to the defense of Ten Commandment and creche displays as well.

Satan may have just taken a body blow.

Yep. And that’s just part of the modern liberal philosophy: Anything not PC must be destroyed. Not just ignored, but destroyed.

But at least they lost this battle.

It’s Michael Newdow again. He’s an attorney now? He only won the first case about the Pledge with the 9th Circuit in 2002.

If they are offended by our money, tell them to use somebody else’s money!

Has this not already long been settled by the courts? Can you just keep suing over the same thing indefinitely until you win?

te majority of the people either do’t care, WANT it, or at minimum are not ‘offended’ by it... we have to stop giving in to the tyrants in the minority.

How does a small fraction of the population get so much power?

Why do atheists even care?

In fact most do not, or at least not enough to make a big deal out of it.

This is a story about one particular atheist with nothing else to do: Michael Newdow.

He has the right to believe what he wants and I have the right to believe what I want. We don’t need any legislation to limit our “freedom to choose” what we, as individuals, believe is right for us.

He wants to expand the boundaries of his “freedom to choose” beyond himself. He wants to impose his beliefs upon us through legislation. He wants to make it a one-way street going his way. And when we object, he wants to penalize us through rule of law for our beliefs.

The motto is just a reminder our nation was founded by people of different religious beliefs who chose to believe there is a god. It does not force us to believe in one. In fact, our Constitution is written to emphasize our freedom from religion to prevent a state sponsored religion from being imposed on its citizens.

This is the real reason he is dragging this through the courts. To destroy one of the founding principles of our nation.

They’re not atheists.

I’ve been saying this for years. They are not atheist. They are fanatical anti-Christians filled with a religious/zealous hatred of Western Civilization.

And that’s why we need a legal system of loser-pays (the loser pays all the costs associated with the case).
