He probably worked in a fire brigade or on an AA gun installation in 1939 and 1940.
He was drafted in 1940 or 1941, after eight more years of indoctrination in Nazi schools and youth camps.
He was 20 years old when he participated in the mass slaughter at Treblinka.
How many of the readers on this thread would have had the courage and the serenity of mind at age 20 to throw down their rifles and refuse to kill innocent people?

Jakiw is a Ukrainian name, but the spelling is apparently Polish. He’s from southeastern Poland, which was incorporated into the Soviet Union as Western Ukraine following the Soviet invasion of Poland in 1939. He probably joined up with the Nazis after they overran the area in 1941.
We need to straighten up that this person was not a German. He was probably Polish (just by name alone) due to his location.

If you are suggesting this Nazi was forced to join the SS, then where is your evidence? The SS was the arm of the Nazi security state whose primary mission was to liquidate Jews and other “undesirables.” If this Nazi was forced to work for the SS, why did he not disclose this fact when he applied for US citizenship. His failure to do so speaks volumes about the voluntary nature of his wartime activities. But, if there are Koreans in the US who lied about their assistance to the Japanese in order to become US citizens, then they should suffer the same fate as the Nazi.
The entire linked article has been re-written since I read it last night.
The original article said he was born and grew up in a farming town (did not recognize the name) in Germany.
This article says he was born in Ukraine.
Bottom Line - if the first article had said he was born in Ukraine, I would not have written my Comment.
Where is it that he was SS?
Do you think it was easy for people anywhere occupied to just abstain from being a NAZI? How many Russians were NOT members of the Communist Party? Or are you going to blame them for not making enough effort to fight or flee?
If they were not in the party, they were in the camps, as prisoners.
But then, I’m no expert on these things, mostly only “knowing” really what the world wants us to know topically.
