There’s A Need for More Constructive Conservatism on Race
National Review ^ | August 20, 2018 | David French

Posted on 08/21/2018 5:05:21 AM PDT by reaganaut1

I have a question. If you’re a young person of good will who is concerned about racial division in this nation, longs to understand how race has played a role in American history, and seeks racial reconciliation — which is to say, one of millions of politically and culturally-engaged young people in America — how many thoughtful conservative voices will you encounter compared to thoughtful progressive voices? Yes, I know that there are conservatives who’ve written outstanding and compelling works on race and culture (Thomas Sowell is indispensable, of course), but if all you’ve got is curiosity and Google, conservative voices are simply swamped, and the conservative commentary that is out there is dominated by a particular tone and approach.

It strikes me that an enormous amount of conservative or right-leaning commentary on race is dedicated to mainly to debunking the excesses and hypocrisy of the identity politics left. Make no mistake, that is a target-rich environment (people twisted themselves into ideological and conceptual pretzels to justify Sarah Jeong’s malicious tweets, for example.) Less is dedicated to seriously grappling with the consequences of racism in American life and culture. And no, I don’t mean dwelling on microaggressions or proclaiming that police have declared some kind of “open season” on Black men.

...

I’ve been pondering this in part because American Evangelical churches are in a bit of a religious battle over “social justice” and intersectionality. Time and again I see concerned young people ask probing questions about stubborn racial gaps in a host of areas of American life, their elders ask them not to follow the siren song of the so-called social gospel, and then drop the ball on providing any meaningful alternative answer. They can debunk, but they can’t (or don’t) construct.

Some causes of "stubborn racial gaps" that John Derbyshire was fired from National Review for mentioning are racial differences in intelligence and short-term orientation.

I guess I disagree.

I think any and all talk about race is boring and divisive. I don’t think there can be a benefit by ever having a conversation that goes: “On the one hand, whites ... and on the other hand, blacks ...”

Look at President Trump. He doesn’t pander to Blacks. He doesn’t “reach out” to Blacks. He is the president of all Americans. And as he helps the country becomes great again, he likes to point out that Blacks are benefiting hugely from his policies. And now about 36% of Blacks support President Trump. No pandering required.

Why talk about race? What is the benefit? Just make decisions that make life better. Focusing on skin color isn’t one of those decisions.

More garbage from Fake Conservative French.

The Conservative message on race is clear and obvious. It the same message that Martian Luther King Jr proclaimed.

It the content of your character, not the color of your skin, that determines your course in life.

Why talk about race? What is the benefit?

When people say that blacks' lower earnings and higher imprisonment rates are due to racism, how do you respond?

If you have any interest in answering at all, you simply demand evidence.

What you will find is that even in cases where race cannot play a role in a subjective decision -- when banks make lending decisions through online applications, for example (I've never been asked any questions about my race on a loan application) -- those stubborn "racial gaps" persist ... which can only mean something that nobody involved in French's "conversation" wants to talk about.

It is a load of horse crap from David French.

"...how many thoughtful conservative voices will you encounter compared to thoughtful progressive voices..."

Because we aren't racists like the Leftists, and think that minorities can rise and fall on their own merits, and that we will accept them on those merits, is an unthinkable argument to the left.

They believe that minorities don't have what it takes to succeed, so they have to sully the accomplishments of those who DO have the drive to succeed, by using affirmative action and other governmental abominations to put those achievers in the same group as affirmative action hires who are pushed there even though they are completely unqualified to be there.

It is called "The Bigotry of Low Expectations" and not only does it exist, they live and breath it on the Left.

If those are "thoughtful progressive voices" we don't want to be part of their racist crap.

More raw smelly sewage from faux conservative French. Not worth the paper it is printed on.

I guess French’s “Conservative” solution is to keep blacks confined on a slightly nicer plantation.

If we could find a way to get more black men working at halfway decent jobs, many of the problems in the US would solve themselves. Trump has taken a giant step in that direction, without overtly proclaiming this as a goal.

If #NeverTrumper David French would come out of his hole and Google "conservative black Millenials" he would be shocked, shocked I tell you, to read about this woman named Candace Owen. "Who is she?" he'd ask, KNOWING that if she was importantly he'd have read about her in a David Brooks column, William Kristol's Weekly Standard, or NR.

There is no shortage of good Deplorable commentators from all ages and all walks of life - indeed, the whole Kanye episode and #WalkAway was inescapable. Yes, a whole generation of Americans are waking up to the horrors of the old guard, the shackles, and are waking up to Freedom. Yea, Trump may be a blunt messenger, but freedom is in the ascent vs where we'd be with Hillary or Jeb!

There isn't an intelligence gap or a dearth of black conservative voices, Mr. French...the problem is with your elitism and smugness. And maybe your age. When Pete Townshend accepted his Rock Hall of Fame award in 1990, he said when it came to new music, "it's not up to us to understand it, it's not even up to us to buy it....we just have to get the f@*% out of the way." Mr French and his ilk should heed Mr Townshend's advice in the political realm.

If you’re a young person of good will who is concerned about racial division in this nation, longs to understand how race has played a role in American history, and seeks racial reconciliation

99% of racial division exists because it's engineered, desired, declared by the left. The last president cynically and desperately chose it as the basis for his reelection campaign when he realized he would lose on any other issue including economics.

Race has played the same role in US history it's played everywhere else: it's part of the landscape. The US is not unique in having ethnic or religious differences.

Reconciliation? A civil war was fought. Laws were passed. Trillions upon trillions of dollars have been spent (or wasted).

At this point, anything French and the young people studiously ignoring him might offer is like hammering a few finishing nails into the Palace at Versailles. Nobody will notice and nobody will care.

Race is a social construct, not a scientific one.

When people say that blacks' lower earnings and higher imprisonment rates are due to racism, how do you respond?

I look to the culture.
I look to the behavior.

I recently saw a clip of Dinesh D'Souza (possibly an old clip) talking about Italian-American families in the mid-20th century. Parents took a firm line with their kids, emphasizing proper, lawful behavior. If some Italian kid got into trouble, people would say, "Of course. His Dad's probably in the Mafia, you know. They're all crooks." And so the Italian-American community actively combated that by trying to bring up the kids the right way.

Today, I don't think ANYONE had expectation that somebody with an Italian name is "probably a crook". That stereotype is dead. The Italians killed it. Because they were smart.

In the Black community, there is no such motivation. Every gang banger who is shot was "an aspiring rapper", he was "turning his life around". They make excuses and they blame the cops. Until that community chooses to adopt better standards of behavior, there is no hope for them.

But this is not about skin color. They are not doomed by their race. But their community leaders convince them that their poor outcomes are somehow MY fault. That's what incessant talk of Racism gets you: no motivation to fix things, just an excuse as to why you don't need to fix nothing.

I don’t care any more.
We have have been trying all my life and longer and, when everything was running swimmingly, Obama and his fellow criminals trashed it.
Now, everything a White does is ‘racism.’
So to Hell with it.

I know alot of White folks, who are just fed up and tired of “talking” about race. It really doesn’t matter what White folks say, do or think. The problems in the Black community are their’s alone to solve and until they “man up” and address those issues that they refuse to address, instead of relying on the “racism” angle, I’m done trying.

‘Educated’ middle class white people know instinctively that the blackamoors are by and large a train wreck and have become disproportionately violent and depraved SINCE the end of segregation. The idea that what we have is the intersection of unintelligent with deliberate vitiation by the so-called black leaders is something so-called educated white people won't go near. What you get is ‘its complicated’. No, its not. It is pretty simple. Blacks on balance are considerably less intelligent than whites, or anybody else it seems, and their so-called leaders have been sedulously propagating the poison of victimology and hating Whitey in order to keep the rank and file trading votes for rat party welfare pottage. The potential for real racial conflict is either being deliberately stoked as part of the long term globalist scheme or is just being ignored for short term selfish gain.

I have come to realize some things have to be experienced over time. I have shame for things I used to think about elders and their motives. As you age it is revealed to you. The young are as they always have been, brash, know it all, and over confident. Even in faith, as we experience life, we come to understand how many principles and concepts we did not have a grasp of when younger.
