Not nearly as strict as California, New York, or others. Illinois is a Shall Issue State for CCW. Chicago has an AWB but not the rest of the State. You’d be surprised at how many folks carry legally in the City.

I still remember the first time I went to Chicago, maybe about 10-15 years ago. I saw a police officer in a restaurant and the amount of body armor he had on look like a soldier on patrol in Anbar Province. I had mentioned this once at a family gathering not in any political way or anything, and my white liberal cousin who lived there then or had recently moved from there piped up about how the cops were a-holes and overly-militarized or something.
This is the kind of lunacy we’re up against. We’re to believe that but the violent crime in Chicago would be much improved if not for the militarization of the police.
Time to call out the National Guard in Chicago.
Is this part of the same back-to-school party where the up and coming rapper from Louisianna was shot for running at cops with a gun? Why aren’t they all taking knees?

Read the police report : “BM”, nothing was mentioned about Amish. No need to read the story, it’s almost a given on the race of the perps. (By the way, “BM” is not paying a visit to the bathroom)
Good for Candace! I think yesterday was the first anniversary of her first video posting. She’s come a long way in a short time, and is making a difference in this country.

The disturbance grew so large at one point that some businesses in Chicago’s busiest tourist district were forced to shut down...

I’ve lived for the last 31 years in a gun saturated subdivision in far west Knox County, TN. Not a single murder or other illegal shooting. I’ve been left out.
I grew up on the West side of Chicago back in the 50’s and 60’s. It was Utopia for a kid. Garfield Park was 3 blocks away with a World Class Conservatory. Madison Street shopping area had all the major shops and was 3 blocks away. The buses to downtown via Jackson Blvd. was 2 blocks away with a beautiful library across the street from my Grammar school, Delano. Life was idyllic. The neighborhood had a small Jewish bakery, Italian bakery, drug store, cleaners, Frank’s shoe repair and 2 Candy stores. Children roamed the neighborhoods until the first street light came on. We used the alleys as our private passages and played in the streets. No child was ever threatened or harmed. The buildings were well kept and apartments were beautiful.
Then the new “neighbors” started moving in. The neighborhood flipped quickly and within a couple of years my family was the last White family on our block. I saw two murders from my bedroom window...one an Egyptian Cobra gang member shot across the street from my building and the other at the small local tavern across the street that had it’s door open and I could see inside when the guy on the barstool was shot and killed. The neighborhood started deteriorating immediately and today is what as known as the notorious West side of Chicago. They took a perfectly, incredibly beautiful neighborhood and turned it into a crime infested filthy ghetto. The Black race has some internal rot that they and only they can address...but until they face that reality nothing will change and it will only get worse.

who keep a slim hope alive that someday America may stuggle its way free of the racial hate and enmity that the democrats have been cultivating for decades.
There are a lot of cities that used to have great places to raise kids. I just moved my mother in law out of one of those places. The culture changed for the worse.
Seward Park is near-North Side, in Cabrini-Green country. The highrise projects are gone, and most of the landscape is transformed into Yuppieville, but the original low-rise projects are still there, and some of the older CHA residents from the bad old days come back to the area for “reunions”.
Otherwise...Harm Emanuel has been pulling cops from the “safe” North and Northwest Side precincts for some time now, to reinforce the war zones. And it’s showing in the crime stats.
Your memories are similar to my mother’s. Her family left West Garfield Park in the spring of 1964, just as the neighborhood really began to slide.
Thank the first Mayor Daley for it...there is strong evidence that, in response to the growing Southern migration of the 1950s to the South Side’s Black Belt (which was right next to his beloved Bridgeport), he chose to let the politically-insignificant West Side be the dumping ground for the newcomers, as a “safety valve” to protect his own neighborhood.
AWBs are a community-level thing around Chicago...Cook County itself has an AWB, but if your community is large enough to qualify for Home Rule, their laws/policies override the County—and many do. Most/all of the affluent communities along the Lake from Evanston north to Highland Park have their own AWBs, but that’s not always the case away from there.
And, of course, there’s plenty of people in those AWB areas who ignore the law....
