Buying fresh vegetables for children, heating an apartment, using Medicaid to manage diabetes. Those are all legal means of support provided by the government for low-income residents of the United States.
But a new rule in the works from the Trump administration would make it difficult, if not impossible, for immigrants who use those benefits to obtain green cards.
**SNIP**
The administrations plan is based on the more than 100-year-old law of public charge, later defined by government guidance in 1999: A person who is very likely to become primarily dependent on government services cannot become a legal permanent resident. The rule also applies to visa applicants from abroad or people seeking to extend a temporary visa within the United States.
Currently, only cash benefits, like Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or long-term institutional care are factors considered when determining if a person is likely to become a public charge.

Um ok. Let de minimus in kind benefits up to a certain low level be exempt. Make food benefits in kind. spam, bulk cheese, dried milk. No EBT charge cards.
Send them back to their own countries to support them.
... So let me get this straight ..... The 100 year old law later defined by government guidance in 1999 is the fault of Donald J Trump who was elected to the Presidency in 2016? ..... OK .... Got it.
Illegals I assume.
Deport all illegals. No exceptions.
Deny citizenship to legal immigrants who use welfare, and send them back home. No exceptions.
Welcome those legal immigrants whose skills benefit the United States and in particular those who benefit working Americans.
Are we letting people in who are dependent on government services 'fresh off the boat'?

Any child would cheer hearing vegetables are off the menu.
I disagree.
Nothing in support for immigrants, illegal or otherwise.
If they can’t support themselves here, they can’t come here.
Why? Why should we be taking such immigrants onto the path to citizenship? And why should taxpayers be paying for them now, let alone in perpetuity, likely for their generations to come?
I thought all LEGAL immigrants had Green Cards. What am I missing?
Yes, sponsors sign (or at least they used to) forms that the immigrant will not be a burden to the taxpayer. If the immigrant requires financial support, the sponsor should have to pay.
If there is no sponsor, Gov. Brown (either one) should have to pay.
My Mom was subject to this law when she came over in 48. I see no reason that this law should be enforced today.
"Immigrants and legal residents" already have green cards!"
Forget the FAKE News Orwellian NewSpeak. They're not "using" those benefits, they're stealing those benefits!
Yes
More like Cocoa Puffs, Trix, Twinkies, Hawaiian Punch. Do they think they are going to get shoeless, screaming feral chicos and chicas with poop in their pants to eat carrots? Give me a break.
This is an Invasion. Pure and simple.
Since Ryan and McConnell REFUSE to fund the border wall, it might be time to call in the US military to stop the invasion.
