The burning of Hidetora's castle was done in one take. No miniatures were used -- they constructed an actual wooden castle, to scale, set it on fire, and filmed in One. Take.
The scene of Hidetora descending the steps and passing through the assembled armies is... well... cinematic.

At one point, I think Mieko Harada as Lady Kaede won the vote for greatest screen villainess. Even though she was justified in her revenge, she just scared the dickens out of Japanese audiences.
