Crazy Rich Asians: The film burdened with 'crazy' Asian expectations
BBC ^ | 8/17/18 | Tessa Wong

Posted on 08/18/2018 5:34:30 AM PDT by SoFloFreeper

With its bold claims of Asian representation, the Hollywood film extravaganza Crazy Rich Asians was destined for intense scrutiny, coming as it does after bitter debates about whitewashing and "yellowface" casting - where white actors attempt to make themselves look Asian.

But like the proverbial "tiger mum", many Asians have huge expectations for the film - might the weight of it all prove too much?

I swear, even the local Miami media is promoting this movie as a MUST SEE because the cast is all Asian.

WHO CARES?! If the movie is good, I don't care about the racial makeup of the cast.

The hype makes me think the movie may not be good, so the "diversity" card is being played. I mean nothing says diversity like a movie with only one race.

BTW, if you want to see real diversity in race, check out Dinesh D'Souza's film "Death of a Nation".

The Wall Street Journal's reviewer said it was quite amusing, if you like rich-people movies, and the acting was very good. I might see it when it shows up streaming on Netflix. I kind of like rich-people movies, regardless of the ethnicity or time period, because I can feel superior about being petite-bourgeois.

If “Asian” weren’t a protected class and government-certified victim group there would be no such movie.

“Asian” is overly broad. Asia includes Russia, China, Vietnam, Japan, Turkey, etc. The cultures do not resemble each other at all. “Asian” was chosen so as to make the victim group as big as possible, to give it more political power.

The choice of land mass is purely arbitrary. Are Malaysia and Indonesia part of Asia or Oceania? The Philippines? Why isn’t Finland considered part of Asia, while Russia is?

It is completely unacceptable to assign cultural characteristics, values, and privileges to people based on the single fact that they were born in a specific land mass, or that their ancestors were.

Primarily made for overseas audiences in Korea, China, etc, like “Great Wall”.

In all fairness, the cast includes people who are racially Malaysian, Chinese, Taiwanese, Filipino, etc., so instead of using “Asian” as a euphemism for “Pakistani” like they do in the UK, smearing all other Asians, in this case, especially because it is after a book called Crazy Rich Asians, it is a break even.

Doing a complete race change of a cast can sometimes work, and sometimes fail horribly, for example Kurosawa’s Ran, after Shakespeare’s King Lear; and the patronizing The Wiz, after the Wizard of Oz.

In America, there's a confusion between the term "Asians" and East Asians - more specifically, Chinese. In fact Singapore (where this movie apparently takes place) is a city-state at the southern tip of Malaysia, and its population consists of Malays and people of Indian background as well as Eurasians and people of Chinese background.

I'll go see it, since it has good reviews, but this is not a breakout film for "Asians" - it's a breakout film for the Chinese diaspora. Hollywood is obsessed with the huge Chinese market these days, and this movie will play well in China.

Do you mean that "Ran" did work while "The Wiz" didn't? If so, I'd agree about "Ran" (I never saw "The Wiz"). I thought "Ran" was an amazing movie by a great director. It's not something I can watch often, but it's something I find myself watching again every year or so.

Okay, will have to put this on my list. “Ran” is a re-telling of King Lear?

As I see it if I want to watch Asians in a movie I go to an Asian movie. For the most part their actors go way over the line in their drama which obviously appears fake! .. However am now tuning into ‘mr Sunshine’....who’s actors are doing a great work with this movie series.

What I don’t like is the obvious insert of Asians into everything that’s out there now. DAh...makes it look like China has taken over the film and Tv studio industry.

[I swear, even the local Miami media is promoting this movie as a MUST SEE because the cast is all Asian.]

I think the reason it’s being hyped is partly the Hollywood hype machine, and partly because the series of novels on which the movie is based did pretty well. I hadn’t heard of the novels until the recent hype fest, but 1m copies is a pretty good number for a novel targeting a niche demo.

These aren’t blockbuster sales on the scale of the 50 Shades of Grey series’ 100m copies, so I’d be surprised if the movie broke $100m at the box office. In fact, based on current ticket sales, I expect the movie to lose money, when promotional costs are factored in.

Part of the problem is the way the lead actress is doing interviews. She’s 100% Grade A anti-white resentment personified. This is an English language Hollywood comedy, which means that it’s tailored to American tastes. And the ticket-buying audience for rom coms is mostly white. She’s a fairly intelligent person who’s let her resentments overcome her judgment. And that will hurt the movie at the box office. The way to interview was to talk about the movie as the Beverly Hillbillies with an Asian twist. Nobody’s ever heard of her - so there’s no reservoir of goodwill to tap. It’s unfortunate, but she wouldn’t be the first actress to deep-six her budding movie career because she’s got a big mouth.

The author’s also a bit of a moron. Hollywood agents wanted to option the novel with a white cast. I suspect it would have made a ton of money, if the source material was any good. But he had to have his all-Asian cast.

Yes. It’s done in a medieval Japanese setting instead of ancient Britain, and the story works very well in the Japanese culture.

Ran is magnificent, a flawless adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear, with a Japanese cast, in Japan.

The Wiz is not even worth a look. It is a “ghettoized” version of The Wizard of Oz, in the lowest form of patronizing the entirely black cast.

We learned to sing “Ease on Down the Road” in 7th grade, which would be 1978. I still remember the chorus.
