If you want to have eternal life, you believe on Jesus Christ.

All of us saved ex catholics know this, but Ann alex engages in Catholic speak, so you probably have to completely explain, letter by letter, what it means to "believe on Jesus Christ." I think many catholics know this in their heads, but not necessarily in their heart of hearts.
Now that we are home from Paradise Island, we are ready to do spiritual warfare again. :-)

I forgot to mention, when I was relaxing on the beach, I got to talking to some people next to us. It was two brothers and their sister. They were all born and raised in Ozamis City. The one guy has lived in Missouri since the 60s. The sister lives in Australia, and the other brother lives near Surigao, but lived in Kota Kinabalu for many years. To make a long story short, they were Catholics, and I told them about the real Jesus, and encouraged them to leave the Catholic Church. Do you suppose I committed a mortal sin of sacrilege by doing that? 😁😇👍🤣😂😊

Not true; Romans 4:4 already speaks of “debt”, i.e. works done for temporal reward.

we describe Roman doctrine as works-based

That description is indeed slanderous, because the Catholic, "Roman" or not, doctrine is salvation by grace alone, which demands of us both faith and good works of love and faith.

You do teach good works. If I were as dishonest as the anti-Catholic Protestants, I would say that you have a works-based religion.

Ephesians 2:4-10 links good works to grace.

Selling Indulgences was based on this false foundation of a treasury of merit.

Yes, selling indulgences was incorrect and that practice stopped right then. Luther was right to criticize it. The Church no longer sells indulgences, but, of course, she will never stop offering them for works of piety.

Only yhat the works are the result of the salvation, not in any way necessary to attain it.

And exactly what works are those that one needs to do to get saved, or be saved, or however you want to call it.

"make sure your calling and election" refers to salvation, that cannot be but by grace.

the opening verses of Romans 4 speak of work done to generate “debt” (see verse 4), that is, it does not speak of good works done out of faith and love.

“merit” is indeed used in two senses: (1) something for which a reward is owed and (2) something that is truly good in itself.

If you want to have eternal life, you believe on Jesus Christ.

That is true, and if you believe on Jesus Christ, you read and obey the rest of the chapter.

Or else you "no longer walk with Him". The Gospel gave the Protestants a direct warning that faith in Christ must include faith in the Eucharist.

Do you suppose I committed a mortal sin of sacrilege by doing that?

It is objective sin, as you did something to endanger the salvation of others.

But since you acted out of error of which you are not aware, there was not conscious participation in that evil. You were a blind trying to lead another, thinking that perchance they are blind as well.

The best thing for you to do is to talk to a priest about your fall into Protestant heresy. He will invite you to sacramental confession. Then, examine your conscience attentively. If you feel remorse, go. During that, mention this episode and express your sorrow over it.

Nonsense.

The “eucharist” is nowhere mentioned in Scripture.

We recieve Christ into our lives through faith, not eating Him.

Annalex,

No part of that passage -at-all- states what you assert.

It simply isn’t in English nor Greek.

You are asserting something that isn’t found in the text.

Why do you do that?

“but, of course, she will never stop offering them for works of piety. ”

HA!!!

Don’t sell them, but you can earn them!

They do not exist in Scripture.

Peter writes that good works and these growing character qualities confirm one is saved.

He does not say they “grow grace to you”.

Oops, you did it again!

Aaaaand?

Paul’s entire argument is that we aren’t saved by ANY works, not circumcision, nor ‘faith and love.’ The only work that matters is what Jesus worked on our behalf.

If Paul meant that you had to do OTHER works in order to be saved, don’t you think he’d mention that and tell us what they are? But he never does. Closest you get is Paul admonishing us to not be slaves to sin, and yet, look at the chapter and he’s talking about people who are already saved.

Ephesians 2:4-10 links good works to grace.

****

Yeah.

And it tells us the exact opposite of what the Vatican claims.

That we’re saved by grace through faith and NOT on account of works, and that the Lord gives us works to do AFTER we’ve been saved.
