Massachusetts mayor boycotts Sam Adams after cofounder thanked Trump for tax cuts

Joseph Curtatone, the mayor of Somerville, Mass., said Sunday that he will never drink Sam Adams beer again after the cofounder of the Boston brewery thanked President Trump for a corporate tax cut.

“I will never drink Sam Adam's beer again!” the Massachusetts Democrat said on Twitter.

Curtatone linked to an article published by the Boston Business Journal that detailed a dinner where Jim Koch, who co-founded Boston Beer, thanked the president for the GOP-authored tax cut that he said would help his company compete against foreign brewers.

In another tweet posted on Sunday evening, Curtatone made a direct message to Koch.

According to the Business Journal, Koch was one of 13 corporate executives who dined with the president at his golf resort in New Jersey on Tuesday.

Koch reportedly claimed during the dinner that the president’s tax reform measure “was a very big deal” for his company, while noting that “85 percent of the beer made in the United States is owned by foreign companies.”

“I mean, Americans — I’m the largest American-owned brewery at 2 percent market share. We were paying 38-percent taxes … and competing against people who were paying 20. And now we have a level playing field, and we’re going to kick their ass,” Koch said at the dinner.

“Wow. But you’ve done a great job,” Trump reportedly said. “Great job.”

How does he feel about Chick-Fil-A? Before he says he hates them, he should give them a heads up so they can hire more staff to handle the public response.

I have not bought beer for home use for over a year. I’m picking up a case of Sam Adams on my way home from work.

I am so glad he did not break my heart. As today’s anti- American and Anti -Trump climate, it would not have surprised me if he had denounced our country and our president. I am so glad he did not.

Looks like I am going to share a Sam Adam’s, when my husband and I go out.

Good to know the mayor wants the hundreds of Bostonians presently working in the Sam Adams brewery unemployed. Won't hold my breath that it will make a difference at election time, but maybe someone of Hibernian extraction can express concern the next time His Honor has the nerve to come down to the Southside.

BTW, Sam Adams IS a great brew. Try it you’ll buy it. I may even go out and get a case today. (LOL, a brain fart, ever think that the Mayor may be a big stock holder in the Co., and is looking to increase the sales?)

That’s OK, I am going to go buy some Sam Adams to support him.

If you make Chili, toss in a bottle or two. You’ll love it

May I use this moment to RECOMMEND the Brewery Tour at the Sam Adams Brewery in Jamaica Plain. Now, I had been a Boston Resident for most of my 65 years, and that area of Jamaica Plain was a real mess when I was growing up. It got worse when hundreds of homes and businesses were destroyed by Eminent Domain in order to build the I95 Extension that never happened. After looking like post-war Dresden for a number of years, the devastated community began to struggle back to its feet. The Founders of The Sam Adams Brewery took over a small abandoned building and began to brew a craft beer, long before it was in style.

Now the community is blossoming, and some of that prosperity can be directly attributed to The Sam Adams Brewery. The Label has been purchased by a big beer company, but the original brewery in Jamaica Plain still designs and makes the beer.

The tour, which costs a whoppin’ $2.00, takes you through the process, tasting and sampling along the way, and then ends up in a beer hall where you are guided through several tastings and get to keep your glass.

Exit through the Gift Shoppe (of course) and back into the Boston Sunshine.

It used to be a “dangerous” area, but now I feel perfectly safe there.

The town of Somerville (known locally as SLUMerville) could use a Sam Adams Brewery to perk it up.
