China: We Might Help Assad with the War in Syria
The Daily Beast ^ | August 11, 2018 | Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian

China has long avoided entangling itself in direct military conflict abroad. But the Chinese ambassador to Syria last week suggested that China is considering doing just that — in Syria.

On August 1, Ambassador Qi Qianjin told the Syrian pro-regime news outlet Al-Watan that China’s “military is willing to participate in some way alongside the Syrian army that's fighting the terrorists in Idlib and in any other part of Syria.” Qi praised the China-Syria military cooperation.

The Chinese military attache in Syria, Wong Roy Chang, said that cooperation between the Syrian and Chinese militaries was “ongoing,” adding, “We – China and its military – wish to develop our relations with the Syrian army. As for participating in the Idlib operation, it requires a political decision.”

It will be fun to see how they actually perform in the field against a determined enemy.

Send a few advisors, then more.
Then troops, then more troops duke to being totally dogged down and losing .
Then many many more troops so earlier debacle will not seem so stupid to have sent.

Then enormous numbers of troops bogged down and slaughtered. Have to not lose face because original plan was so wrong.

Then withdraw in disgrace and let original Arab civil war go on as before. Hope the Chicoms fall for the Viet effect. They deserve it.

The outcome is no longer in doubt. That’s about as brave as the USSR declaring war on Japan, right after Hiroshima.

“China responding to opportunity.”

My view is that this is related to the trade issues, and they think they are sending a message to Trump. Their posturing will make no difference.

I think it is likely that China will become more and more belligerent as it becomes apparent that the days of fueling their economy on the back of the US are coming to an end. They will posture, and posture, and threaten, and start sounding more and more like North Korea. They will also become more meddlesome in the world. They’ve been relatively good winners, but will not be good losers.

China wants to find out if its new military is any good, and to test out its logistical ability. They have no dog in this fight otherwise.

Correct.

China is retaliating via other means...trying to warn the US.

It shows how simple and silly they are as a state.

But they have never operated on a worldwide stage before...

Very true.

China has never operated in anything other than its home turf.

One nice whack, and they will lose their nerve real quick.

My thoughts exactly. This is becoming like the Spanish Civil War in the 30s, a testing ground for new equipment and tactics.

Training. Live fire FTX. Think about it, Chicom armed forces have not fared well against Russia, India and Vietnam.

They have all these new toys to check out.

This is what happens when you invade a sovereign nation without permission that has done absolutely nothing to you and espouse a policy to overthrow the elected government of that sovereign nation. You better win. In this case we lost and now we reap the whirl wind. Both Russia/ China and Iran have an alliance with Syria and we dont.
In Ukraine we staged a military coup to over throw the duly elected government of the Ukraine and installed a military junta which rules today but look what happened there. The Russians who had a 40 year lease on their only warm water support obtained mass support by the pro Russians people in Crimea to secure passage for use of that port. I have never seen a single person from that region even complain since their election was thrown out by Obama backed militarily thugs that rule what is left of Ukraine by the gun to this day.

I definitely have limited knowledge about China, but I agree with you 100%. I've had these discussions with some mainland Chinese who are here working. Their view is that it is inevitable that China will be a major, if not the major world power.

From my perspective they are a Communist nation that recognized, after the USSR lost the Cold War, that they needed to use Western economic principles to be able to fund their growth and militarization. So far, they've been able to use the greed of globalists and the fecklessness of American politicians, in their quest to become a major producer of goods, and a world superpower.

They are not, however, a Western society, and are still managed top down by the government. When that is entrenched, it inhibits the individuality and individual creativity that is the engine of an entrepreneurial society. This is not universally true, but it is true enough generally that it will become a major problem for them once they can no longer appropriate and assimilate the creativity and intellectual property of other nations. They will need massive reform to get past this. No one has pushed back yet, and they are going to be stunned by the effects of this pushback. It will get very nasty, unfortunately.

If they get involved, I don’t think they’ll lose. But their rules of engagement will be pretty draconian. During their month-long incursion into Vietnam, they are estimated to have killed 100K civilians. For some perspective, during entire Holocaust, the Germans killed 12m civilians. That’s a run rate of about 250K people per month. The Chinese weren’t far behind. Now, the difference is the Chinese weren’t actually looking to exterminate Vietnamese civilians as some kind of ideological imperative. But their view of guerrilla warfare is the medieval view. Ambushes by men in civilian clothing means open season on the entire civilian population. Think Lidice, where over a thousand Czech civilians were slaughtered in reprisal for the death of Reinhard Heydrich. Killing civilians is easy. Genghis Khan slaughtered millions with armies typically numbering in the tens of thousands. Medieval rules are why guerrilla warfare was uncommon in antiquity - the consequences to civilians were severe, widespread and final.

The question might be how they will control the information flow over these large-scale killings. I expect the same way they did over the Vietnam incursion, by killing journalists on sight.

There’s this idea that communists did not have to deal with counter-revolution after their victories because they were pure of heart or some such. In reality, they conducted large-scale mass killings of opponents and potential opponents in order to scare the rest of the population into submission. 4.5m civilians were summarily executed in the course of the Communist purge:

Maybe if we’re lucky, we will have a Sino-Soviet war in Syria. The Chinese can work on their “overpopulation.” The Ruskies, not so much!

US is also supporting Assad, or should be.

The terrorists are the ones who are trying to take Assad out and take over Syria.

Wow.

I learned a lot from your post. For some reason I don’t have the shocked, upset revulsion I used to have, so long as it is done to my enemies and I am not doing it myself. Is it burnout from so many atrocities including Muslim terrorist ones since 1900?

So many bad things happened in my life to me and to my wife that I have a lot of anger.

In the book The Future of God (2015) Deepak Chopra (a miserable liberal who hates Trump) wrote that God cannot go on having us pray, live by His Word, obey His Law , have faith and wait patiently with no sign of any response from Him. Sorry to say I wonder about that. I have held back and held back so long while Dems and the Leftist News Media People have flourished.

I love God and the Holy Scriptures I study daily. I hope He will not forever let the evil ones flourish.
