Sea level rise 'overblown,' solar energy 'dumb,' conference of climate change deniers, Trump officials hear

White House officials join event mocking climate change science and renewable power

Thomson Reuters · Posted: Aug 09, 2018 4:01 PM ET | Last Updated: 21 minutes ago

Pumping carbon dioxide into the air makes the planet greener; the United Nations puts out fake science about climate change to control the global energy market; and wind and solar energy are simply "dumb."

These are among the messages that flowed from the America First Energy Conference in New Orleans this week, hosted by some of the country's most vocal climate change doubters and attended by a handful of Trump administration officials.

The second annual conference, organized by the conservative think tank the Heartland Institute, pulled together speakers from JunkScience, the Committee for a Constructive Tomorrow, and the Center For Industrial Progress, along with officials from the U.S. Department of Interior and the White House.

Panels at the event included: Carbon Taxes, Cap & Trade and Other Bad Ideas; Fiduciary Malpractice: The Sustainable Investment Movement; and Why CO2 Emissions Are Not Creating A Climate Crisis.

Claim That Sea Level Is Rising Is a Total Fraud

Sea levels began to rise 18k years ago at the end of the last glacial period. They have risen about 135 meters since then which is an average of 7.5 millimeters per year. That is an average of 750 mm per century (29.5 inches) which is far more than the average over the last century.

From 1880 to 2000 sea level rose about 20 cm or just under 8 inches. Far less than the nearly 30 inches per century average over the last 18,000 years.

The most recent data from NASA shows a decline in sea level.

Inconvenient: NASA shows global sea level…pausing, instead of rising

Curious why the Democrat party governing California is so against providing water to their constituency. Seems to me the building of desalination plants up, and down the coast would be high on their list of good ideas as those plants would suck up all that water they claim is rising.

Once the sky is covered in ash from all these forest fires we will have a nuclear winter and the water levels will go down as more ice forms here and there.

We will run out of food but have plenty of ice for our mixed drinks.

Wind and solar on sailboats have changed long-haul cruising forever. There are now some very nice catchment funnels for bringing rain into your freshwater tanks too.

You can definitely get away with NOT having a dedicated generator. You can also now carry a portable water-maker that will produce 20 gallons of water per gallon of gasoline.

Sorry to get off on a tangent, but the cruising community has been a big beneficiary of the wind and solar movement.

Yeah they can’t say that because the last time I went to the beach, it wasn’t there anymore. Well, actually it was the same if not wider.

Grow root vegetables and ferment them then drink them....

Russia has perfected this technology...

There are islands in the Pacific that are two inches above sea level... They will be the first to go under if there is ANY sea level rise. There has been ZERO change in these islands...

I get the joke, but I think you’re confusing distillation with food preservation (fermenting)...

The crazy thing is that sea level isn’t really level. There can be localized changes in sea level all over the world. In some places it is rising, where in other places it is lowering. Much of it has to do with local gravity conditions, but currents, temperatures, salinity, and a million other factors. The two ends of the Panama Canal are not at the same level! With all of those factors, how do you determine what the sea level should be and what is actually causing it to rise or fall? Same as the temperature of the Earth. It is not within our means to understand a coupled multivariable chaotic system to the level needed to predict tomorrow’s weather much less the climate.

Pumping carbon dioxide into the air makes the planet greener

Granddaughters were wondering where food comes from. I told her that plants suck carbon out of the air, and use sunlight as energy to build vegetation from the carbon. Yup, food is not made from dirt, it's made from carbon in the air. In the process, plants release oxygen for us humans to breathe in. Carbon dioxide in the atmosphere makes food and oxygen possible for humans and all other animals to live. Carbon dioxide is not such a bad thing after all, it is necessary. And there isn't much of it in the atmosphere, a tiny fraction of a percent. We actually could use more of it. This global warming stuff is nonsense, as rising temperatures lead to rises in carbon dioxide, not the other way around. Long ago in some of the dinosaur ages, there was far more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere while temperatures were lower. Shocking! It didn't lead to higher temperatures on Earth!

Most of the people I have seen saying the sea levels are rising seem to ignore crustal rebound that has been taking place since the last ice age ended.

Curious... isn’t the displacement of ice (frozen water) in water greater than the equivalent in liquid water?

Wouldn’t melting glaciers result in a reduction of the sea level instead of an increase?

I guess that you would have to account for melting ice and snow on land.

I went to a memorial at Marina del Rey last month and we went out on a charter boat to spread the ashes at sea. I used to contract there back in ‘85. As far as I could see no change in the sea level in 32 years. Some of those homes are right on the water. Believe me, if those well healed people were swamped they would be screaming bloody murder. Same thing probably in Florida as well.

No, I don't believe so. Many have posted the challenge to put ice cubes in a glass of water, let it melt and see if the water level has changed. I haven't tried it but they say it does not.

In any case, measuring sea level is very complicated. The first link in my post does a great job of explaining the many considerations that need to be taken into account.
