Tim Cook worries that humanity is “being drained out of music”

Fast Company’s former editor and good friend Bob Safian recently returned to contribute a profile on Spotify founder Daniel Ek, in which they discussed his views on music distribution and curation. For a contrasting viewpoint, Safian also talked to Apple CEO Tim Cook about the way he and his company view music. Here’s what Cook said:

“I couldn’t make it through a workout without music,” Cook says. “Music inspires, it motivates. It’s also the thing at night that helps quiet me. I think it’s better than any medicine.”

Apple Music relies mainly on human curation to suggest music to users, while Spotify depends on algorithms. Cook didn’t call out Spotify by name but he is clearly highlighting the difference in approach with this quote:

”We worry about the humanity being drained out of music, about it becoming a bits-and-bytes kind of world instead of the art and craft.”

Reading this, I wasn’t sure if Cook was talking about the way tracks are chosen for users, or the way music itself is created by songwriters and producers. Either way, he’s right.

I thought you had to pay for music that you buy. Like $1.99 or so. I’m on an Android.

Well, Gee, moovova, one always has to pay for music that one BUYS. . . but if you already have CDs one can simply rip them into iTunes. . . or find MP3s elsewhere and import them. iTunes will search your computer for any music that is already on your computer and import it for your use on any iPod, iPhone, or iPad, or to stream to an AppleTV or HomePod. You can also legalize any ripped music you have through iTunes by paying Apple's monthly music subscription which also allows you to upgrade all those low sampled bit rate MP3s to the highest available sampling rate available for no additional cost. . . but that's an option one doesn't have to subscribe to.

Worst piece of software EVER. I still refuse to believe Apple wrote it.

That Apple version and the Windows version are really completely different pieces of software.

Yeah...guess that sounded silly. I think what I meant to say was pay for the songs you download...a dollar or two. I’ve pretty much stopped buying music though. Once Half.com quit, I lost interest. I’ve got maybe 250-300 CDs on my 256gb micro-sd card in my Android (most purchased legit)...another 500 vinyl LPs that I’ll never convert to mp3...but I find myself just cranking up Pandora (free app) anymore.

I like the Apple part that lets you legalize your ripped music with their subscription plus bump up to the highest sampling rate.

Millennials can’t make music. It’s dead for now.

Oh. Of course I have the Windows version. Why can’t they make it work, though, since they want that money from the Windows side? It’s truly awful.

You know I have been 99% Apple for decades, but Tim Cook makes me ill, starting with when he gave $$$$$$ to SPLC and the ADL (even more far left after Foxman left) and now especially after knocking out Alex Jones at iTunes/Podcasts while leaving up that raging anti-American/antisemite POS Louis Farrakhan.
