Armadillos moving north across U.S. a sign of global warming

The nine-banded armadillo is quietly expanding its range out of the southeastern United States, invading regions once too cold for the small mammal to survive.

Scientists monitoring the armadillo's progress say the migration is a consequence of rising global temperatures. And it's a sign of more to come.

"Armadillos are a pretty good climate change indicator species," said John MacGregor, a herpetologist at the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. "When things that don't tolerate cold climates are suddenly appearing in a cold area, it tells me that area is getting warmer."

Areas that once experienced bitterly cold winters, like much of the Midwestern United States, will see new plants, insects and animals slowly invade as the weather warms.

It's already happening. Green tree frogs are following the armadillo north and east across the United States, as are fire ants, MacGregor said.

"We've all seen the pictures of the stranded polar bears," he said. "The Arctic is a window into our future. What you see happening to the Arctic is going to come to the Midwest. It's already started."

And a Snowy Owl being spotted in southern Kentucky by our house is a sign of global cooling.

And in my southern Pennsylvania neck of the woods grass is being displaced by lush moss and lichen and aspen trees are starting to appear.

Looks like taiga to me...global cooling alert!

I had a Snowy Owl this spring and now the nearby harvested grainfields are overrun with Canadian geese.

We are overrun with armadillos in Mid-Missouri. They are across the Missouri River and as far north as Moberly.
I killed eight last year on our land. Three so far in ‘18.
Their bodies are all over the highways....

How can they be sure the armadillos aren’t, “evolving,” to tolerate more northerly climes?

In other environmental news: Migratory birds will within a few months be moving south across the U.S. a sign of global cooling.

If the area is colder how is it warmer? Perhaps the armadillo is a global warming fanatic wishing the environment to warm.

It is also possible that the Armadillo is acclimating to colder temperatures. It is doing what all species try to do, increase its range. As the population expands it increases its foraging area. The armadillo is another wild animal capable of surviving in areas densely populated by humans. Its foraging habits make human habitats uniquely desirable.

Dear Lord I pray that we will have milder winters.

Last winter we had more than a week of temperatures below 0 F, and more than a month when it never got above freezing (32).

We had at least one major snow storm every week for at least six weeks.

I’m more than ready for Global Warming.

PLEASE!

It’s called natural adaptation, and the chattering class is in a tizzy over it.

There is some reason to believe that in recent years, yes global ground temperatures have gotten warmer, first rapidly and now at a pace so slow it might as well be a plateau considering the margins of error. And that CO2 is likely not to blame for it. What is a more likely cause is successful efforts in most places to curb particulate air pollution. Less smoke and smog means more sunlight hits the ground and warms it. Greenies should be tickled instead of wagging fingers at CO2.

Should China seriously get on board the anti-smog bandwagon, its contributions to “global warming” will probably send average global temperatures on another, temporary, upward swing.

Uh. Someone had better clue MacGregor in that everyone knows that the picture of the stranded polar bear is a fake.

When manbearpig was born there were 7,000 polar bears...

Today, only 30,000 remain.

The dillos are just trying to get off the roads. Too many end up crunching under wheels then flipping up and destroying exhaust systems (been there, done that).

Chicken little... alive and well?

John MacGregor is unfit to receive a taxpayer-funded salary with his reliance on correlation and confirmation bias.

Polar bears (Ursus maritimus) are capable of swimming incredible distances, according to a new study published in Zoology, which recorded polar bears regularly swimming over 30 miles (48 kilometers) and, in one case, as far as 220 miles (354 kilometers).May 3, 2012
