WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would allow the federal government to shut down if Democrats refuse to back major changes to immigration laws his administration wants.
“I would be willing to ‘shut down’ government if the Democrats do not give us the votes for Border Security, which includes the Wall! Must get rid of Lottery, Catch & Release etc. and finally go to system of Immigration based on MERIT! We need great people coming into our Country!” Trump said on Twitter.
Trump wants Congress to pass legislation that addresses immigration issues. Although Republicans control Congress, disagreements between moderates and conservatives in the party have impeded a speedy legislative fix.
An immigration bill favored by conservative Republicans failed to pass the House last week. Trump has requested $25 billion to build a wall along the southern U.S. border with Mexico.
U.S. House Speaker Paul Ryan said last week that $1.6 billion has already been appropriated for the wall and lawmakers were considering another request for $5 billion.
Lawmakers met with Trump last week to discuss the appropriations process to fund the government.

That’s good to hear. I hope he will also shut down the government if Republicans refuse to support the Wall and Merit-based immigration.
If the problem was just Democrats it would already have been solved.
The headline should read,
“Trump Threatens U.S. Government Shutdown Over Illegal Alien Invasion.”
Not sure why any Republican ever fears a government “shutdown”, i.e. temporary suspension of all non-essential functions. Is that not the next best thing to a permanent shutdown of all non-essential services?
Bush League Republicans MUST become extinct before the Republic does.
How many billions in total, both State and Federal, does the US spend to service the illegal population? ~200 billion a year? Yet congress can not afford 25 billion for the wall.

Trump drew a line in the sand in March when he said he would not sign another bill unless it funded the wall. He needs to dig in. Ryan and McConnell will never find the wall voluntarily. Forget the Dems it’s the RINOs holding up traffic.
And that included a huge pile of crap one calls Republicans. And McConnell and Ryan needs to go now.
Because they get pilloried by the MSM, and the GOPe press (most of FOX) jumps on, too.
