Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Tim Scott torpedoed a conservative nominee to the Ninth Circuit appeals court on Thursday whom even liberals called qualified for the bench, citing college-era political comments, energizing Democrats, and creating a new line of attack against the confirmations of dozens of other judicial picks, including Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court.
Ryan Bounds, an Oregon federal prosecutor who clerked for Judge Diarmuid OScannlain on the Ninth Circuit, had an impressive array of credentials that impressed people on the left and the right. Even the left-wing American Bar Association (ABA) unanimously voted to rate Bounds as qualified for the Ninth Circuit after they reviewed his full record, showing that even those firmly aligned with liberal priorities acknowledge that college-era political riffs do not disqualify someone from a federal judgeship.
But what should have been a historic moment for the Trump administration and the Republican Party to nominate a qualified judge ended in a failed nomination due to Rubio and Scotts efforts to take down a conservative judge due to misgivings about the nominees writings in a college newspaper.
Scott privately told Rubio on the Wednesday before the vote that he had concerns about Bounds racially insensitive writings in the Stanford Daily, a conservative college newspaper, back in 1995.

The man promised amnesty to Spanish speaking La Raza event audiences while at the same time promising border security at Republican events during his first ever campaign.
He had to be lying to one group or the other since the beginning of his political career. It’s now clear which group he was lying to.
I have always found him nauseating.
“We have met the enemy and he is us.”
Disgusting!
Behold, the chamber of amnesty mouthpiece speaks.
Come here to peddle more open borders crap bert? It’s not like you ever sing a different song.
can judges be auto appointed during recesses of congress?
Precisely. Pickups in Florida, Indiana, Missouri and hopefully Ohio and North Dakota will render these asswypes irrelevant.
Have you looked at the headlines on Rubio today? I’ve had a damn enough of Rubio.
People wonder why I am so firm about my revulsion for people who sell us out once in a while, or for periods of time.
It goes to character.
We desperately need Conservative justices on the 9th Circuit Court of appeals, and here Rubio and Scott grand stand to look important, just shafting the Western states so badly that desperately need help at the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
In 2016 we had people who were aiding Hillary Clinton deep into the election year, just to hear their own jaws flap.
Others just sat on their hands, instead of help defeat her.
That’s how dedicated to the nation or Conservatism they were.
I have no use for people like that.
And they did it from right within our ranks, big name people doing this. F’em.
Here two of our own struck down a good qualified man we desperately need.
I detest these people. They’re not one of us.
I understand Rubio’s stabbing the back stance, but
What’s Up with Tim Scott?
Scott is evil
OK, I read through some of Bounds college writings, and all I can say is, his big mistake is apologizing for them. Nothing he said was particularly wrong, and he ought to have stood by it.
Apologizing to the left never buys you anything anyway. They let you grovel, and then kick you out just the same. May as well go down with all flags flying.
Never apologize unless you have actually done something wrong, for which you are actually sorry, which has actually harmed someone. I hate pro for a apologies to people who are permanently outraged and permanently offended.
Whats Up with Tim Scott?
Same old. Same old.

Look around at ALL of SC’s Congressional delegation.
Cheap Labor Express stooges all.
Cowards and Backstabbers.
Is Bounds not the 9th Circuit nominee that several FReepers were against a couple of weeks ago, for being too liberal? There was only one nominee put forward for the 9th, wasn’t there? If he truly is a conservative, McConnell should have worked harder to get votes. Is he trying to keep that court liberal?
Scott has put his own helm to port, too.
Rubio is a slick pretty boy, who cleans up good, but is like the oh so polite private school guys back home, who would say “please”, while talking gullible or inexperienced girls into having sex with them. It’s guys like him, who give used car salesman a bad name. (I say this as the child of a used car dealer, who could sell ice cubes to Inuits, but slick, he was NOT). I sure do miss my dad.
He may be the FReeper who jumped all over me, several months ago, when I pointed out that, although greed and avarice, are allowed in capitalism and free enterprise, that doesn’t make it right.
Little Marco is a dirtbag.
Anyone who supports open borders is scum, and Rubio was part of the Gang of Eight.
Rush called Rubio a “full throated conservative” during the 2016 primaries.
The only time Rubio was “full throated” was when he hooked up with another dude at a foam party.
Scott is a token and a waste of space.
Both Oregon senators opposed him.
