NAACP rescinds its support of Puerto Rican statehood

The NAACP on Thursday rescinded its support for Puerto Rican statehood.

The civil rights group emphasized Puerto Rican "self-determination" in a statement walking back its endorsement of a bill that would make Puerto Rico the 51st state, which it voted to support on Tuesday.

"Puerto Rico should be free to decide its preferred option in a fair and inclusive manner," the NAACP said, adding that it has a "long history of supporting the democratic value of self-determination."

In a statement on Tuesday, the NAACP threw its weight behind the Puerto Rican Admission Act after an appeal from Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, who described Puerto Rican statehood as a "civil rights issue."

The NAACP reversed course following pushback from statehood opponents.

Though Puerto Ricans voted for statehood in 2012 and 2017, opponents say the votes were "rigged" because the referenda did not include the word "commonwealth" as an option for voters to choose, using instead the more neutral "current status."

In the 2017 referendum -- the basis for the Rosselló administration's claim to statehood -- 97 percent of voters chose statehood, but participation was a paltry 23 percent, largely due to a boycott of the vote organized by the opposition Popular Democratic Party (PPD).

PPD Chairman Héctor Ferrer on Wednesday criticized Rosselló's speech to the NAACP, saying the real civil rights issue for Puerto Rico is to allow supporters of the commonwealth to vote for their preferred option.

"The way to do it is head to head, everybody has the right to vote for what they want," said Ferrer.

I agree with your take.

I will state that I like the round one, but I’m not convinced I’d really want to see it adopted. Maybe it will grow on me.

It’s a clever one though, I’ll grant you that.

Exactly....

Making PR a state would be a mistake.

They should make Hawaii a state before PR, IMO.

Maybe that was our first mistake, LOL.

Their judges are a pain in the vesuvius.

They should make Hawaii a state...

Well... That actually happened.

In 1959.

We should cut PR loose. It’s never going to be a self-sustaining place. Furthermore, we should not be allowing Puerto Rican to “immigrate” to the mainland. They will cause terminal damage to states like Florida. I’d be for cutting Hawaii loose too.

I kinda think that black Americans with jobs are aware that illegal immigrants take jobs away from them, especially the minimum wage ones. Publicly they maintain political solidarity with the Democrat coalition (but not this time!!!) but friction between blacks and Hispanics goes back decades and is not going away.

As for PR, they should seek annexation with Cuba, IMO. The PR’s I knew in the military admired Cuban food & culture, and thought Fidel Castro was mistreated by the `evil yanquis’.

I recall that Emily Litela said we should “make Puerto Rico a steak”.

If so, you couldn’t make Grade triple ZZZ mystery burger out of that place.

My thoughts exactly!

I like the first of three versions the best.
It’s orderly, and does not morph into an entirely new shape compared to what we’ve been using.

The second version is needlessly decorative, and appears too static; an old and dusty clay Urn, left on a forgotten shelf of history.
The third version looks like a rapidly shrinking Black Hole, imploding on itself, shrinking into irrelevance.
I know. I’m probably over analyzing it. It’s one of my hobbies; delving into undisclosed meanings.

I like that idea immensely!
If America were to ever seriously even consider statehood for Israel, it would drive much of the other countries bananas!
That sort of proposal would make Trump Derangement Syndrome
look like a Baby Shower preceded by a Picnic.

In 1972 Buckley famously proposed that Israel become the 51st American state, pointing out that Jerusalem is no more geographically remote from Washington than Anchorage or Honolulu. The arrangement, Buckley argued, would forever put to rest Israeli security fears: “If Israel becomes a part of the United States, there is no further question of attacking the state of Israel – as well attack the city of Chicago.” To expedite statehood, Buckley wrote, a “resolution should be introduced in Congress and a national debate should begin. Put me down in favor.”

Then we should trade Hawaii state hood for Samoa.

It is called: “Knowing which side of the welfare bread the butter is on.” The naacp realizes that bread is in short supply...
