NAACP rescinds its support of Puerto Rican statehood

The NAACP on Thursday rescinded its support for Puerto Rican statehood.

The civil rights group emphasized Puerto Rican "self-determination" in a statement walking back its endorsement of a bill that would make Puerto Rico the 51st state, which it voted to support on Tuesday.

"Puerto Rico should be free to decide its preferred option in a fair and inclusive manner," the NAACP said, adding that it has a "long history of supporting the democratic value of self-determination."

In a statement on Tuesday, the NAACP threw its weight behind the Puerto Rican Admission Act after an appeal from Gov. Ricardo Rosselló, who described Puerto Rican statehood as a "civil rights issue."

The NAACP reversed course following pushback from statehood opponents.

Though Puerto Ricans voted for statehood in 2012 and 2017, opponents say the votes were "rigged" because the referenda did not include the word "commonwealth" as an option for voters to choose, using instead the more neutral "current status."

In the 2017 referendum -- the basis for the Rosselló administration's claim to statehood -- 97 percent of voters chose statehood, but participation was a paltry 23 percent, largely due to a boycott of the vote organized by the opposition Popular Democratic Party (PPD).

PPD Chairman Héctor Ferrer on Wednesday criticized Rosselló's speech to the NAACP, saying the real civil rights issue for Puerto Rico is to allow supporters of the commonwealth to vote for their preferred option.

"The way to do it is head to head, everybody has the right to vote for what they want," said Ferrer.

Ricardo Rosselló, who described Puerto Rican statehood as a "civil rights issue."

Moron. The is no right to Statehood. The right to petition FOR Statehood exists, but it ain't no guarantee.

Sadly, it’s an problematic area to be sure.

You touched on one point. As I understand it the folks they love to vote Leftist too.

It would be a mistake to bring them on board.

I would like to see their lot improve, but it seems their leaders are as corrupt as our Leftists here.

Yes and the NAACP saw the light.. Federal money can only be spread so deep.
More recipients, less to each.

It’s closer to 73%.

Footnote - Clinton killed the tax break for manufacturers in PR.

Scratch the surface, and Blacks and Hispanics do NOT like each other very much. Can’t stress that enough.

No it won't. There are lots of very good reasons to oppose PR statehood, but that isn't one of them.

PR is Bernie’s free stuff army on steroids with a small percentage of people who actually work for a living. It’s a liberal’s dream constituency with a permanent government dependency class that doesn’t want to work to better themselves, but is content to live an welfare.

That seems to be the case. I’m no expert on Puerto Rico, but every time I get a glimpse of what is going on down there, it seems to fall in line with your description here.

Bingo.

Blacks used to be America’s so called “second class citizens”. Not any more. They’ve been bumped down to third class.

Hispanics have taken over the minority role here in the US, and have taken all the resources leaving less and less free (stuff) to blacks.

This being true - why? Why do blacks welcome and encourage illegal immigration?

I sort of like the circular one, which is an homage to the first Betsy Ross flag, including the square blue field.

The hexagonal one I can't stand.

Blacks really screwed themselves when they allowed Hispanics to get affirmative action.

AA was supposed to go to blacks.

Now all the jobs are being divided between blacks and Hispanics.

And it's worse because as Hispanic populations increase, social service jobs go to people who speak spanish.

Hispanics are using blacks as their stepping stone and blacks are blind to what's going on.

Not only blind but actively encouraging it because they believe the black-brown coalition is going to take down the white man.
