In the early/mid '50s a few SECULAR Jews began having "HANUKKHA TREES", but they were small and there were NO elaborate gifts, decorations, etc.! They were given HANUKKHA GELT ( gold foil covered chocolate coins ), which I found kinda funny, since all of us kids ate those year round.
Now, the whole Hanukkha thing is really out of control and the meaning of that celebration is almost lost; sadly.
Thank you for that info. I had no idea.
Also re Christmas and Hanukkha......
We ALL sang Christmas Carols in school, had Christmas parties, saw "CHRISTMAS MOVIES" in assemblies, and NOBODY complained; NOT ONE SINGLE KID OR PARENT!
Friends visited each other's homes, were made to feel welcome and treated with all due respect back then. If you has a Catholic friend over for lunch or dinner, on a Friday, even though you were a Protestant, no meat was served. If your friend was Jewish and Religious...forget about ham, meat & cheese sandwiches, etc. and nobody batted an eye!
I had black friends in grammar school and we stayed in touch through college, though in high school most were NOT allowed, by their parents, to date whites; but we could still be friends and nobody cared if we danced together at parties.
There was no AFFIRMATIVE ACTION and NO other PC garbage back then and it was better for everyone that way. Heck there were even a few blacks in the boarding school I went to and they weren't there because of skin color ( though they were paler than Obama! )but because they scored well on the PSATs and the school's entrance exam!
This may not have been the same everywhere, but it's they way it was where I lived.
Sadly it has all changed, and now people want to be victims, or offended.
