Jobless claims fall to the lowest level since 1969
Washington Examiner ^ | July 19, 2018 | Joseph Lawler

New claims for unemployment benefits fell 8,000 to 207,000 in the second week of July, the Department of Labor reported Thursday morning, the lowest such number since 1969.

Forecasters had expected new jobless claims to edge up to around 220,000. Instead, fewer people sought unemployment insurance than anytime in 48 years.

Thursday's benchmark is especially impressive given that the labor force is twice as large as it was in late 1969.

Then, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent, Richard Nixon was president, and "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" was the top song in the country.

Low claims are a sign of a healthy labor market. They indicate that layoffs are rare and that job creation is strong.

Claims have stayed historically low in recent months, signaling that the jobs market is going to get better even with unemployment, at 4 percent, already near the lowest it has been in decades.

Thursday’s results are likely to reassure Federal Reserve officials that they right to pursue tighter monetary policy, and may even lead them to begin accelerating the pace of interest rate hikes.

Could it be that we are set to have an even more productive decade than the Reagan years?

Is that because everyone is working two jobs?

I wonder what the labor force participation rate will be. Should be released by 8/3. The last one showed unchaged since the President took office.

The rate should actually edge down each year as the boomers age and retire. The LFPR for prime working age - 25 to 54 - was up from 88.5% at his election to 88.9% last month (which was down from 89.3% from a few months earlier). I expect that to tick back up again next release

BLS link.

More “Trump separating parents and children”.

Now he’s creating jobs for the parents to get them away from the children for hours at a time!

So how is the media going to explain this positive outcome away? Suggestions:

Trump's overheating the economy. Inflation will soar.

The unemployed are so demoralized that they have quit applying for unemployment benefits.

All the jobs are minimum-wage jobs with no benefits.

Trump's administration is cooking the numbers.

Nothing to see here - it's just a temporary blip in the numbers.

Hey, quick - look over there.

Russia, Russia, Russia - The Russians hacked into the DOL computers and changed the numbers.

Report it at 11:53 pm with no comments or if print media, bury it on page 6.

This is the result of Obama's policies.

Other suggestions? Winning all the time has evaporated the media's excuse pool and they need some help coming up with new ones to deceive their viewers and to keep us conservatives entertained.

I am trying to understand the disparity between the jobless claim number being about 200K, and the welfare/food stamp recipient number being about 39 million. Both have been coming down, which is good, but why the huge difference?

While I agree, that number was influenced by boomers prior to 2017. Yet it was an atrocity.

On the other hand, this guy says older workers are working longer. https://townhall.com/columnists/stephenmoore/2018/06/26/the-state-of-the-american-worker--never-better-n2494290

What do you get when you put a half a dozen economists in a room? Twenty different opinions, none of which are right.

Stats show the 25 to 54 rate the same as 1/2017 when Trump took office.

BOL! We are seeing the opposite. Grand kids and grand nieces and nephews are working 2-3 jobs this summer to get out of the house and away from their parents.

The separation with kids working is great for the parents!
