Jobless claims fall to the lowest level since 1969
Washington Examiner ^ | July 19, 2018 | Joseph Lawler

Posted on 07/19/2018 6:59:01 AM PDT by GonzoII

New claims for unemployment benefits fell 8,000 to 207,000 in the second week of July, the Department of Labor reported Thursday morning, the lowest such number since 1969.

Forecasters had expected new jobless claims to edge up to around 220,000. Instead, fewer people sought unemployment insurance than anytime in 48 years.

Thursday's benchmark is especially impressive given that the labor force is twice as large as it was in late 1969.

Then, the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent, Richard Nixon was president, and "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" was the top song in the country.

Low claims are a sign of a healthy labor market. They indicate that layoffs are rare and that job creation is strong.

Claims have stayed historically low in recent months, signaling that the jobs market is going to get better even with unemployment, at 4 percent, already near the lowest it has been in decades.

Thursday’s results are likely to reassure Federal Reserve officials that they right to pursue tighter monetary policy, and may even lead them to begin accelerating the pace of interest rate hikes.

DO THESE WAKADOOS EVER GET ANYTHING RIGHT?...................

The Fraud couldn’t be surrounded by anyone more intelligent than him, so no.

During his illegal reign, ALL bad news was UNEXPECTED to his worshippers, and his handlers didn’t shy away from using that word EVERY TIME.

Now, they’re having a harder time trying to convince smarter people that GOOD news is unexpected, and are making themselves look even more stupid.

Possibly - we had 8+ years of no recovery.

So the economy still has a lot of slack in it.

I wonder what the labor force participation rate will be. Should be released by 8/3. The last one showed unchaged since the President took office.

That might be difficult to improve without a significant change in the socialist welfare/free ride systems people have become addicted to.

There are children coming of age, young adults, and entire families who have never seen or experienced a family member, relative, or family friend holding down a steady job.

They idea of someone getting up each morning and going to work to earn their own money is foreign to them - something their families haven't experienced in a generation or more.

I don’t know anybody working two jobs. From whence that idea?

Yes, you can see even in the 25-54 group it fell off considerably during Obama’s 8 years. Given that it is now considered acceptable to live in your parents basement for so many people my age or younger (I’m 36), I think it will take wages growing significantly to get the rate back to 91-93 that it was pre-obama/recession.

I work in a tech company with a lot of liberals in it, and every morning they hit me up with something “unpresidential” Trump said or did.

I almost never get challenged on policy. It’s always the confirmation bias I’m fighting reinforced by Trump’s perceived lack of finesse.

I get it - When a person is predisposed to bias against an opposing worldview, somebody with Trump’s...Unique speaking style and articulation seems *on the surface* to reinforce the underlying reasons for that bias.

These people would literally take a smooth-talking empty suit devoid of any American self-interest over the guy who pulls our economy out of the figurative toilet as it’s circling the drain.

There’s nothing Trump could say to bring people invested in the establishment to switch sides. I’ll admit, it’s kind of fun watching my colleagues self-destruct trying to articulate an actual POLICY of the administration that’s negatively impacting them. :)

In other words...Still not tired of winning!

It would have happened anyway because of o’bungholes policies, it simply took a year and a half after he left office for them to kick in

The newly elected socialist Bern Babe from New York said that the unemployment rate was low because so many people are working two jobs. Such stupidity is usually displayed by the likes of Maxine Waters, so the election of this Cortez person is a good thing.

I would like to see the labor participation rate higher, at around 66% or so. Its been stuck since Obama, but hopefully that changes with the reduction of welfare and food stamps gibs that were from the Obama era.
