Poland reacts to Trump-Putin meeting
Reuters ^ | Jul 2018 | Marcin Goclowski

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki:

"I look at the latest developments, including Helsinki, where it might have been that one president of our neighboring country (Putin) was pressuring the U.S. president for concessions. But I have not seen any concessions, neither as regards the annexation of Crimea nor the war in Ukraine," Morawiecki said.

"None of the voices that were appearing beforehand as hypothetically possible - concessions by the United States - have materialized. So I don't see where he (Trump) has made any significant concessions.

Poland is the biggest former communist country in both the European Union and NATO, and has called for the alliance to boost its defenses, especially after Russia seized Ukraine's Crimea peninsula in 2014.

"NATO's eastern flank needs to be strengthened because Russia's aggressive policy has not, unfortunately, ended," Morawiecki said. "This aggression hasn't diminished in any way. President Trump must have come to the same conclusions."

Poland has repeatedly requested a permanent U.S. military presence on its soil and has offered up to $2 billion in funding for such a base. U.S. soldiers are now present on its soil through NATO's back-to-back rotation.

Last March, Poland signed its largest arms deal ever, agreeing with the United States to buy Raytheon Co's Patriot missile defense system for $4.75 billion. Its plan to boost air defenses is aimed at deterring Russia, which has long opposed the formerly-communist countries' integration with NATO.

All of those jokes are interchangeable for different groups in different countries and territories. Irish jokes in Australia, Newfoundlanders (”Newfies”) in Canada, Cajuns (”Coonasses”) in Louisiana, etc. How they ever got applied to the nation that produced Copernicus, Chopin, and John Paul II may be a mystery, but the jokes are universal.

Anyone who doubts that need only look up "King Jan Soebeiski" or "1683 Siege of Vienna".

Look up "Witold Pilecki"

Very nice people. Krakow in particular is a gem, and Auschwitz is a place everyone should see so it’s never forgotten. But their cuisine makes British food seem spicy. Don’t forget to pack some Tabasco or Sriracha sauce.

Don't forget the Wieliczka Salt Mine. And a lot of people rag on Warsaw, heck even the Poles do, but I enjoyed it, especially walking down Krakowskie Przedmiescie to the Old Town. And Warsaw is absolutely booming.

And people let the jokes run off their backs back then, not go cry to HR or pull the victim card. I am reminded of the Dirty Harry scene:

De Georgio: Harry hates everybody. Limeys, Micks, Hebes, Fat Dagos, N*****s, Honkies, Chinks, you name it.

Gonzales: How does he feel about Mexicans?

De Georgio: Ask him.

Harry Callahan: Especially Spics.

Today, those lines would lead to Watts riots.

Wieliczka is amazing, especially the carvings. And yes, I love the centre of Warsaw, it has its own charm, though nothing beats my wifes's home town, Torun.

Not made it to Zakopane yet, unfortunately. Still on the list!

Well, living in Chicago where we get the most Polish immigrants I think I can speculate. I don’t think we tend to get the cream of their society over here, at least not in the majority. Basically, a lot of them are what other Poles would basically call “hillbillies”, and when they come over here they are not sophisticated at all and the results can be hilarious.

There was a funny British show called “Harry and Paul” that featured skits, one of which was about a Polish Cafe in London, the actresses obviously aren’t Polish, but it was kind of cute in showing how Poles are.

It’s been their goal since the 50s.

All the deaths in the prior 50 years didn’t mean anything to them.

The "New Europe" IMHO is the countries of the Three Sea's Initiative, the old one is dead, pretty much.... Remember when POTUS went on his big trip last year he started in the heart of it, Poland. ( Yes some other countries around these 12 I'd add to the list )
