The Illinois state election board said Friday that it is likely the state referred to in special counsel Robert Mueller’s latest indictment as having been hacked into by Russian intelligence officers, the Chicago Tribune reported.
Illinois officials said Friday that they had requested confirmation from the Justice Department that it was the state mentioned in the indictment.
The hack has been public knowledge for nearly two years, with the FBI issuing an alert about the cyber attack in August 2016, one month after it took place.
“We are grateful that DOJ has identified who the perpetrators are,” state election board spokesman Matt Dietrich said, according to the Tribune. “We never had anything on paper until today, and even then we don't have a firm statement saying ‘Yes, it’s you,’ although we think it’s more than likely ‘yes.’ ”
Mueller charged a Russian intelligence officer with hacking into a state’s elections board website and sending spear-phishing emails to state elections officials.
The indictment states that hackers obtained private information on about 500,000 voters in the cyber attack, including names, dates of birth and partial Social Security numbers.
Dietrich said officials think that number is closer to 76,000 than 500,00 but that federal officials may have “arrived at using a different methodology prescribed under federal criminal code.”
He added that none of the notified voters have reported suspicious activity to the state, according to the Tribune.
Twelve Russian intelligence officers were charged Friday in the 2016 hacking of the Democratic National Committee (DNC).
God, this is just laughable. The Russians hacked into Chicago election machines. To what end? To make sure Chicago didn’t go for Trump? Of course Chicago jumps to his feet to thank the doj for making sure elections are okay. What a farce.
Man, you think that the Russians might have a voting listing and an address list, and might be establishing that half the folks listed....are either dead or illegally on the list? This was supposed to be top secret.

I guess the Russian hackers in Massachusetts, California and Oregon who were changing those states to Trump states were better at covering their tracks.
Then this tools was hacked or intentional given to a foreign state.
As a side note to this thread, please consider this.
I’m not cyberspace security expert, but keep in mind that hackers in all countries are probably hacking 24/7.

Hell that was just Chicago doing routine election fixing not the Russians.
Crook County likely wanted to make sure it could still count ballots from Russian-American, yet dead, voters.

IP spoofing seems widespread these days. Child’s play for governments.
Some of the states said that the IP addresses of the hackers came back to DHS. It is so hard to believe that was true after we see what Obama’s justice system was capable of.
Too bad for the Russians, the cemetery voters have hacked the Cook county elections for over a hundred years. The newcomers are amateurs by comparison.
