Not as if what we have now is Free Trade.
Our trade policies over the last several decades have been the equivalent of unilateral disarmament: other countries either impose tariffs or create bureaucratic red tape to keep out our goods, while we do no such thing to theirs through “free trade agreements”.
Exactly.
What Trump is doing has the ultimate goal of getting us closer to the “mythical” Free Trade.
Let them form their solid block. There is nothing to worry about. The USA is the money basket of the world. They will be blocking themselves out of the money basket for as long as is necessary. Eventually they will learn which side their bread is buttered on. Meanwhile, I will be happy to see more US motor vehicles on the roads and in the parking lots of America. BMW’s and Mercedes annoy me, to say nothing of Toyota. Americans just might learn to buy American again and find out that all the garbage promoted by AntiAmerican auto manufacturers just “Ain’t” True. “Prestige” vehicles don’t get you there any faster.
Because that would mean it would be good for the US and negate their argument.
That’s the way it works. And the buyer may be an auto plant buying headlamps from a headlamp manufacturer.
“If US tariffs are bad for the US economy, why is no one discussing why country Xs current and retaliatory tariffs are bad for Xs economy?”
Be careful now.
Your question/logic based on reality might push some of our Never Trumpsters/anti Trade BSers right over the edge.
They have been brainwashed by the WSJ and NR for years and believe that Americans paying high tariffs is good for us!
US exports to the EU are assessed a VAT at the point of entry. The VAT rate on imports is calculated based on the value of the goods plus any customs duty. The person or firm responsible for paying this VAT rate is called the importer of record. If the U.S.-based exporter is listed as the importer of record, then the U.S.-company takes on all responsibilities associated with the VAT. However, in most business to business transactions (B2B), the importer of record is the business customer located within the European Union.
These VAT rates make it difficult for the US to penetrate the EU market. Customs duties/tariffs are charged on top of the VAT.
a sales tax imposed at every step of production which adds valueUnfortunately you don't see how stupid that statement is.
Another example of how the left brainwashes idiots by bastardizing the language.
Raising prices and reducing employment is exactly what tariffs do.
Now, in China’s case, we may want to provoke them to retaliate to the point that their economy collapses, but we had better be prepared for the pain should we choose to do that.
You sound like a liberal: “Oh, people don’t change their behavior because of tax policy.” (Except experience has proven over and over that they do.)
Tariffs are taxes, and you’re now claiming that no harmful effects will occur because of that tax, even though other taxes provably do cause behavior to change. (Why do you think we have “sin” taxes?)
Do we import a lot of BMWs and Mercedes from China?
Why do we still have taxes to pay for WW I? I’m not a lib, I am more Libertarian according to a Q and A poll. I am also far right of fascist when it comes to law and order. I think most people sway both ways in their lives. There is always a little Liberal and Conservative in all opposing sides.
“Why do we still have taxes to pay for WW I?”
Heck, we just paid off the Spanish American war
(Federal excise 3% tax-1898-2006) scam.
All of these German companies have already announced plans to build in China and hand over all of their IP’s to the Chinese. Volvo has been owned by the Chinese since 2009.
