Tokyo (CNN) Seven members of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which carried out the deadly 1995 sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway, have been executed, Japanese officials said Friday.
Cult leader Shoko Asahara, whose real name is Chizuo Matsumoto, had been in prison for 22 years before his execution this week. The attack left more than a dozen people dead and thousands injured.
Twelve other members of Aum Shinrikyo were sentenced to death for their roles in the Tokyo attack. Asahara's death sentence was finalized in 2006, according to public broadcaster NHK, but trials of his co-conspirators dragged on for a further 12 years.

Also notable that the sarin attack was in 1995. And only now have the appeals been exhausted.
As one British historian I read put it, "Hanging is the most important contribution of the early Germanic peoples to civilization."
Rather a sterile paneled hanging chamber
Should’ve sent them to Texas.
Death Row in Texas is like going to Disneyland compared to Death Row in Japan.
This conclusively proves that Asahara’s claimed ability to levitate was untrue.
No Asian jails are known as luxury resorts.
I would consider that more humane than being told that I would be executed in two weeks or two months.
I would rather have less time to dwell on it.
And ... in the meantime ... I bought ... and played...the PS One ... PS Two ... PS Three ... and PS Four.
They used to use convicts to test their swords. A really good one could cut 3 bodies in half with one swipe.
Well, sorry to hear that but then again, you would have wasted all that time on something else anyway.
As I understand it, this attack was the main thing that led to no trash cans on the streets of Japanese cities, you literally have to duck into a store to find a small trash can if you need one.
So what is the difference in this particular cult and others like Islam? The number of members or the number of children, elderly, and mentally handicapped as suicide bombers?
Speculation is Aum Shinrikyo detonated an atomic device in the remote Australian outback, but the event was detected only years later by review of seismograph archives.
In France executions came to be done before sunrise. The warden and guards and other officials would come to the man's cell and he would be violently awakened if he was asleep. "Your appeal has been denied. Be brave." said the warden. From there it was a short walk to a final communion with the priest (or imam as the last guy executed was a Muslim) and offered one last cigarette and glass of whiskey. They also made him sign the release order from prison, because it wouldn't be the government per se doing the deed. He was handed over to the executioner and his team, bound, collar cut from his shirt, and then rushed out the door into the courtyard and the guillotine standing there.
From being awakened to the head landing in the basket was usually less than ten minutes.
I thought this case was over and done with. Kudos to Japan for bringing it to its proper conclusion, even if belatedly.
Executions in Japan are done in secret, with no advance warning given to the prisoner, their family or legal representatives...
Nice wood paneling in their death chamber though. Can't help but think about the old Johnny Cash song "25 Minutes To Go".
“So what is the difference in this particular cult and others like Islam?”
Or antifa and other elements of the democrat party.
What? No VR?
