Brett Kavanaugh, Supreme Court Front-Runner, Once Argued Broad Grounds for Impeachment
NY Times ^

Posted on 07/05/2018 8:39:51 PM PDT by springwater13

Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh, the front-runner to replace Justice Anthony M. Kennedy on the Supreme Court, once argued that President Bill Clinton could be impeached for lying to his staff and misleading the public, a broad definition of obstruction of justice that would be damaging if applied to President Trump in the Russia investigation.

Judge Kavanaugh’s arguments — expressed in the report of the independent counsel, Kenneth W. Starr, which he co-wrote nearly 20 years ago — have been cited in recent days by Republicans with reservations about him and have raised concerns among some people close to Mr. Trump. But Judge Kavanaugh has reconsidered some of his views since then, and there is no evidence that they have derailed his candidacy.

But Judge Kavanaugh’s role in the investigation of Mr. Clinton’s affair with a White House intern, which resulted in his impeachment in 1998, has raised a red flag among some people close to Mr. Trump. At a minimum, his views about when to impeach a president are sure to come up during a Senate confirmation hearing and would allow Democrats to shine a spotlight on Mr. Trump’s handling of the Russia investigation.

The Democrats have released their attack plan for Kavanaugh. They will make the hearings about Trump's impeachment and argue that Kavanaugh should use the same standards in the Starr Report to impeach Trump.

Kavanaugh strikes me as a Deep Stater.

I think Kethridge from Michigan is a better choice.

The Ginsberg seat is going to expected to be filled by a woman.

Arguably it’s easier to avoid this trap by nominating someone else.

Over and over and over and over and over and over...

If the NYT wants to compare levels of crimes Bill to Trump, or even Hillary to Trump, I think Trump will come off favorably.

By now the Russian collusion case has been revealed to be a complete fabrication, and the investigation based on falsified subpoenas.

So yes NYTs, let's talk about this. It needs to get out in the open.

Those of us who support Trump are sick of your baseless smears.

Kavanaugh is the one possible nominee who is on record for opposing an assault weapons ban. He is the only one of the bunch known to be most supportive of our Second Amendment. Now, you know the reason for all of the conspiracy theories and slander coming from the lurking left.

Empirical SCOTUS blog sees Brett Kavanaugh as likely SCOTUS nominee

Kavanaugh would be attractive to conservatives because of positions he took on two hot-button issues: gun rights and abortion. Kavanaugh dissented when the appeals court rejected a challenge to a Washington, D.C., ban on assault weapons enacted after the Supreme Court found an individual right to own guns under the Second Amendment. Kavanaugh also dissented when the full D.C. Circuit required the U.S. government to allow an abortion for a 17-year-old immigrant who was being held in a shelter because she is in the country illegally.

I don’t trust Kavanaugh any further than I can throw him. He is a hardcore Bush family acolyte, and has lived far too long amongst the swamp creatures in Wash. D.C.

Brett Kavanaugh 4 #SCOTUS unless something shifts significantly in the next 24 hours. I cannot get excited about someone who recommended Roberts to Bush, wrote an opinion upholding Obamacare, and has hired throngs of liberal law clerks and fed them to liberal justices.

BANG!

To comment #8 for critical Second Amendment info on Kavanaugh.

Hey, 1_Inch_Group! I found out that PROCON still has an RKBA (right to bear arms) ping list! Ask him to add you to it.

Hey, PROCON, please add me to the list, too!

Why do you think that dissenting from a vote is better than a vote against (no/yes) the majority that are on the wrong side of the issue?

Notice, the Democrats have mostly left Bret Kavanaugh alone but trash other potential nominees, while the beltway Republicans & their media surrogates are in a frenzy for Kavanaugh & trash those who dare to inquire about his originalist credentials.

A dissent is a vote against the majority. Judges write dissents. They don't write noes.
