Instead of a Ban, Transgender Military Recruits Hit Endless Red Tape
New York Times ^ | July 5, 2018 | Dave Philipps

Nicholas Bade showed up at an Air Force recruiting office on an icy morning in January, determined to be one of the first transgender recruits to enlist in the military.

He was in top shape, and had earned two martial arts black belts. He had already aced the military aptitude test, and organized the stack of medical records required to show he was stable and healthy enough to serve. So he expected to be called for basic training in a month, maybe two at the most.

Six months later, he’s still waiting. And so are nearly all other transgender recruits who have tried to join up since a federal court ordered the Trump administration not to ban them from the military.

The Obama administration announced a plan in 2016 for the armed services to begin accepting transgender recruits at the start of this year. But before the plan could take effect, President Trump abruptly reversed course, announcing on Twitter in July 2017 that the military would “no longer accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity,” because the military “cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail.” Military leaders were given little notice of the change, which has left a wake of controversy and confusion.

Civil rights groups immediately sued, claiming that a blanket ban was unconstitutional, and the courts blocked the new rules. Three federal judges hearing separate cases issued injunctions against the ban last fall that cleared the way — in theory at least — for transgender recruits to start enlisting on Jan. 1.

Since then, scores have applied — but it appears almost none are being accepted.

The Defense Department refused requests for statistics on transgender enlistments.

Good. I don't want to pay for their genital mutilations ("gender confirmation surgeries") or pay their salaries while they are incapacitated for months afterwards. I also don't want crazy traitors like Bradley "Chelsea" manning in the military, and I don't want traitors to get off easy as "Chelsea" Manning, whose prison sentence for espionage was commuted by Obama.

Liberals love "endless red tape" when it applies to business.

Why can't they pay for their own operations to change gender?

Take a loan out with the US Military branch they serve under and have the payments of principal and interest taken out monthly like everyone else in this country.

The first, and foremost rule regarding anyone enlisting or seeking a commission in the military:

Are they world-wide deployable?

Since trans require constant hormone replacement therapy, then NO. They are not. This restricts them to CONUS locations only. Thus, they are not compatible with military operations.

Well, I suppose that could be debated.

No. They’re loonies. We don’t need them in the US armed forces.

Why should the taxpayers bear the burden for the meds and special treatment necessary to keep these rascals in uniform.

Two genders plain and simple

Do federal judges have any standing on military matters?

LOL, I said several times that if the military can’t find a way to tie these applications up for years they aren’t trying. In triplicate.

They should not.

I am surprised the Trump Administration has not taken this to SCOTUS as yet another example of Judiciary interfering with the Constitutional powers granted to POTUS.

There is more here than a trans ban (I assume there will be so few that actually make it past basic to be almost meaningless). This is a separation of powers issue and MIGHT be the case Thomas wants to finally slap down the lower courts for continuing to think the Judiciary is the only branch of the US Government.

Amazing that the NYT can call a gender dysphoric person “stable” and keep a straight face.

Transgendered have a suicide rate of 40%. That ALONE should be a basis for rejection from the military.

Transgender illogic:

-They are constantly speaking about being on the precipice of self-harm or suicide if denied treatments, surgery, pronouns, praise, etc.

-They should also be put in charge of the world’s most advanced weaponry.

It isn’t just the gear but the endless hormone “therapies” used to fatuously deny biology that will try to reassert itself.

I’ll be blunt: Ask / Tell was always the correct approach ... ask if they are homosexual or whathaveyou, if they lie to get in subsequently tell and get rid of them.

Don’t Ask / Don’t Tell was a camel’s nose, a nose should have been cut off with extreme prejudice.

Yep. If they are not deployable and have a pre-existing medical condition that is debilitating and expensive, I’m sorry, the military is not just a benefits program for tormented teens.

Do federal judges have any standing on military matters? .................................. Do they have a Military Branch to enforce “their rules”? The military has it’s own rules, and they should be the judge as to how they operate. The military is there to fight battles, they’re not social workers, they are a fighting machine that depends on cohesion of their units. They don’t need any social obstructions. If they feel its a morale problem, so be it. They must do what they have to for the benefit of those who carry the most of the burden. They don’t need 5 separate latrines, just 2. Besides at $5000 a seat, they’ll save money.
