Tim Scott: Discussing race with Trump was 'painful' but made me 'hopeful'
The Hill ^ | 06/30/18 | Max Greenwood

Posted on 06/30/2018 6:41:09 PM PDT by yesthatjallen

Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) acknowledged that his conversations with President Trump about race have been "painful" and "uncomfortable," but insisted that the president has kept an open mind on the issue.

"They're hard, they're painful, they're uncomfortable to sit in the Oval Office and have a conversation with the president about things that you strongly disagree about," Scott told CNN's Van Jones. "He didn't change his perspective, I certainly can't change my perspective."

But Scott also said that he was "hopeful" after the conversations.

"The way it closed I thought gave me reasons to be hopeful," Scott recalled. "It closed with: 'Tim I don't see what you see. What can I do to make things better.'"

"That was a shocking response. I was surprised after the conversation that his response was: 'Help me see a better light," he continued.

Scott added that it was after that interaction that Trump agreed to back his legislation creating "Opportunity Zones," which seek to use tax incentives to draw investment to areas of the country with high poverty and low economic growth.

Scott's meeting with Trump last year came after Trump faced bipartisan backlash for insisting that both white nationalists and counterprotesters were responsible for the violence that broke out in Charlottesville, Va. last August during a rally organized by racist groups.

Scott told CNN in April that he does not believe that Trump is a racist, but said that the president can be "racially insensitive."

One thing I would like to see President Trump try is to reduce the minimum wage to $5/hr for those under 20 years old. I think this would bring more inner city youth into the job market. Idle hands are the devil’s plaything.

.
There are more poor white people, by sheer numbers.

But, there’s not a single politician that speaks for them.

Scott is a one issue Politician when you get down to it. Certainly his favorite subject.

SC can pick ‘me. Stray Gowdy, Lindsey Graham, and yet another race baiter.

“What can I do to help” isn’t good enough?

Is anything enough?

What should the president have said, I wonder?

Just stop with the guessing games already.

...this meeting happened last year and it is being reported as news now. Why?

************

If you read the article I think there have been others.
Conversations (plural) are mentioned more than once.

“The way it closed I thought gave me reasons to be hopeful,” Scott recalled. “It closed with: ‘Tim I don’t see what you see. What can I do to make things better.’”

And did you show the same courtesy to say “Mr. President I don’t see what you see. What can I do to make things better”, Tim? Oh, you didn’t?

And you’re dumping on the President to the racist, commie Van Jones?

I think we need to replace two senators in SC.

from the same Van Jones interview!

30 Jun: CNN: Sen. Tim Scott plans to recommend Trey Gowdy for Supreme Court
By Veronica Stracqualursi
Scott called Gowdy, a former federal prosecutor, “incredibly fair” and said he was an equal opportunity critic of both the Trump and Obama administrations.

“A guy who will call balls and strikes and not choose a side, even when he’s an elected member, at this time in our nation’s history that’s hard to find,” Scott said.

The two Republicans have grown close over their time in Congress and recently co-authored a book, “Unified: How Our Unlikely Friendship Gives Us Hope for a Divided Country.” ...
“I want someone who understands and appreciates where our country is today, not where it was 50 years ago,” Scott said.

Unemployment among Blacks is at an all-time low.

Yes, I’m sure it was tough to have to admit that when Trump brought it up.

Perhaps it was having to realize Obama never achieved this that was so tough.

What the idiot seems to be admitting, is that it’s tough to admit Blacks have never had it so goo.

Just dang! We’re so sorry...

Well, not really... I’m glad things are turning around for Blacks. Excellent.

I wasn't there and don't trust anything from the media about what happened.

Most likely most of the non-leftists were there to support keeping Robert E. Lee's statue and were unaware that "white nationalists" were claiming to be in charge of the protest.

When I was a student, the gay activists would from time to time announce a "blue jeans day" when people were supposed to wear blue jeans to show support for the gay cause. But they did not make much of an effort to publicize it, and most people wore blue jeans most of the time anyway...so students would arrive on campus and discover that they were supposedly showing support for gays. Some people would even go home to change clothes when they learned that.

So I would guess the former Obama activist who was pretending to be a white nationalist at the time of the Charlottesville protest may have engaged in a similar kind of deceitful tactic.

What a cuck. If I were DJT, I wouldn't let this pansy near me again.

At first glance, the “media” reporting this claim are of the very far left persuasion.

I found it to be a pro-Trump article. Him saying he thought Trump could be racially insensitive sounds like lots of African-Americans, who say Caucasians can’t understand.

The way I read this article and Scott's comments I suspect any "disagreements" he may have with Trump over "race" stem from the fact that accepting NO excuses for bad behavior on account of somebody's complexion can be disturbing to those who have a lifelong habit of doing so. Sen. Scott would not be immune from this tendency. In fact, it's probably as close to universal among blacks (and women) as can be.

Trump, the successful businessman, seems to have always insisted on the very best from his employees, and fired/replaced any and all who couldn't cut it. His whole persona on "The Apprentice" was based on this hard nosed reputation. For some it's hard to get their heads around the fact that such an attitude is a sign of respect, not discrimination. Why make allowances unless one assumes, as Democrats do, that blacks are inferior?

Hmm. Maybe Trump mentioned SCOTUS to Gowdy, and that’s why he’s not running for reelection.

They were both responsible, probably more so the so-called counterprotestors. What's the point?
