Top congressional Democrats are demanding President Trump begin reuniting immigrant families who were separated under the administration's "zero tolerance" policy.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) released a letter to Trump on Thursday saying they were "deeply dismayed" that the administration hadn't started trying to reunite thousands of children separated from their families.
"It seems that the administration lacks a plan, intention, and a sense of urgency to begin reuniting these children many of whom have suffered serious emotional anguish with their parents," the two Democratic leaders wrote in their letter.
Schumer and Pelosi are demanding the administration present a plan "as soon as possible" to reunite children already separated. That plan, according to the two lawmakers, should include undoing the "zero tolerance" immigration policies that lead to families being separated along the border, a plan to reunite families and that, when reunited, the administration provide alternatives to detention.
"These alternatives have a proven track record and are significantly cheaper for taxpayers than the artificially-prolonged incarceration of asylum seekers that only enriches private companies in the business of running prisons," Schumer and Pelosi wrote.
The letter comes after Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday afternoon allowing for immigrant families detained along the border to be kept together "where appropriate and consistent with law and available resources."
The decision followed days of backlash and high-profile coverage of immigrant children being separated from their parents when they were detained along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Maybe they expect Trump to use his magical powers to make everything all nice again.
And another thing, Trump gave them what they wanted.
Where are the 'thank-yous'?
Trump took away their narrative and now they're trying to create a new one of urgency.
In their Home Countries
Send them to Pelosi’s mansion.
I trust Trump but I don’t see how this helped.
What about the basic “If they don’t want to be separated, come in the legal port of entry. It’s that simple.”
Giving an micrometer just means they’ll push harder for the next outrage of the day - all to screw us regular Americans.
I hope this actually ends up helping... Trump is pretty smart.
Tell the two obstructionist pigs that youre going to be building a wall from the defense budget and it starts immediately.
These two insane POSs belong in a padded cell....not congress.
You mean reuniting families of people killed by illegal immigration Chuck and Nancy? No? I didnt think so. You could give a flying fig about Americans.
Where is the GD outrage in the media about the Americans that have been killed by illegal aliens? Where is it?
Good. Trump can start with Manafort’s family.
Is there a way that Schumer and Pelosi can be forced to deal with this issue themselves? They should “own it” and be held responsible for any failure.
But he can now point to this as a compromise and/or concession and tell them it was a one time deal and now they own him a compromise and concession.
He can 'put his foot down' again and say, 'NO MORE CONCESSIONS !'
Great idea!
“provide alternatives to detention”
In other words, allow them to cross the border without penalty for breaking U.S. law.
As FReeper Tadslos insightfully posted: Another classy move for libs.......exploiting (what they see as) Child Abuse for their own political gain.
Put a bed for Huma in Weiner’s cell.
What they aren't saying is that a fair number of these children were separated under the great and powerful Oz-bama's regime. Of course, they had no problem with the policy then...
If theyre here ILLEGALLY they can reunite in their home country.
+1
The day Trump listens to Bolshies is a day he listens to Ivanka.
The Soros party always has demands never answers aka idiots and a long record of proof to back it up.
