A Richmond, Virginia, elementary school will switch its name from that of a Confederate general to that of the nation's first black President.

On Monday, the Richmond school board voted to rename J.E.B. Stuart Elementary as Barack Obama Elementary School.

Members of the school's community submitted ideas for a new name and students at the Richmond school, which is 95% African-American, voted among seven choices. The top three finalists were: Barack Obama, Northside and Wishtree.

Last year, a school board in Mississippi dropped the name Jefferson Davis, for the president of the Confederacy, in favor of naming an elementary school after America's 44th president.

Also on Monday, the Tulsa, Oklahoma, school board voted to rename Columbus and Chouteau elementary schools, but delayed the vote on what to call another elementary school that is named for Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

The stain is fighting for his faction to control the DNC. Or at least that’s my take on many of these Muslim candidates.

As long as we’re talking about naming things after BO. A friend of mine had colon cancer several years ago. As a result he now wears a colostomy bag. The nurse at the hospital informed him that he was supposed to name his colostomy bag and what name would he choose. He said he was going to call him “Barry”. She said why and he said he’s full of $hit! When I see him now I always ask “How’s Barry?”

School Digger has the stat Free/discounted lunch recipients at 96.4%, so I guess the name Barack Obama Elementary is fitting.

Yes, generally not a wise idea to name something after someone who is still alive...although in the Early Republic lots of towns and counties were named for heroes of the Revolution (Washington, Jefferson, Patrick Henry, George Rogers Clark, Henry Knox, and many others). More recently, Cincinnati named a street after Pete Rose (before his disgrace)--not smart.

I wonder what some of the unsuccessful suggestions for renaming this school were...Che Guevara? Pol Pot? Karl Marx? Nat Turner? Trayvon Martin?

If a school which has a 95% black student body needs to be named after a black person, there are lots of more suitable people who could have been chosen. Arthur Ashe? Frederick Douglass? Jackie Robinson? Thurgood Marshall? Ralph Bunche?

... there are lots of more suitable people who could have been chosen.

That's always the case.

Why do we have a hundred schools named after John F. Kennedy?

Because the people who decide these things (and the rest of the public) can only keep a few names in their heads.

Do it.

Which people knowingly move on to MLK boulevard?

Which people knowingly move to Barack boulevard?
