A Richmond, Virginia, elementary school will switch its name from that of a Confederate general to that of the nation's first black President.
On Monday, the Richmond school board voted to rename J.E.B. Stuart Elementary as Barack Obama Elementary School.
Members of the school's community submitted ideas for a new name and students at the Richmond school, which is 95% African-American, voted among seven choices. The top three finalists were: Barack Obama, Northside and Wishtree.
Last year, a school board in Mississippi dropped the name Jefferson Davis, for the president of the Confederacy, in favor of naming an elementary school after America's 44th president.
Also on Monday, the Tulsa, Oklahoma, school board voted to rename Columbus and Chouteau elementary schools, but delayed the vote on what to call another elementary school that is named for Confederate general Robert E. Lee.

Talk about destroying history. Chouteau was an early American trader who had trading posts for the Indians from Oklahoma to North Dakota, providing goods to American Indians.
That was my first thought.
Dollars to doughnuts the school underperforms at everything (except sports) by miles, and that J.E.B Stuart would be embarrassed to have his name associated with it.

It would be interesting to follow up and see how much changed for the better after the names were changed.
A while back, some academics had analyzed various genocides throughout history and came up with the “8 stages of genocide”.
I believe we are at about stage 2 or 3 right now, where the perpetrators destroy symbols/culture of the targeted group and begin to dehumanize them.
I looked up “Chouteau”, and the guy the town was named after led a much more interesting and racially/ethnically diverse life than Obama could ever dream of.
