~The FReeper Canteen Presents~ Road Trip: Pohakuloa Training Area, Hawaii Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) is located on the island of Hawaii between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Hualalai Volcanic Mountains. It extends up the lower slopes of Mauna Kea to approximately 6,800 feet in elevation and to about 9,000 feet on Mauna Loa. The training area is about midway between Hilo, on the east coast and the Army landing site at Kawaihae Harbor. The area is the largest DOD installation in Hawaii. The PTA consists of 108,863 acres, of which 24,048 are leased by the Army from the State of Hawaii. The remaining land is ceded and includes the impact and range areas and a portion of the west maneuver area. The leased areas include the northern maneuver areas and the support complex. The training site can be reached from Oahu by either direct military helicopter or fixed wing flights to PTA or by using commercial airlines to either Hilo or Kona. From Hilo or Kona the site is reached by using Saddle Road. The distance is approximately 40 miles to both towns. The Saddle Road is frequently closed to the public due to poor surface conditions caused by storms and heavy military vehicles. In preparation for large scale training exercises at PTA, the ground forces are flown to Hilo and transported over Saddle Road. Supporting equipment and vehicles are transported from Oahu by ship or barge to Kawaihae and driven to the site. A tank trail parallels much of the Saddle Road. These movements involving personnel, equipment and light vehicles could ideally be accomplished by flying directly to PTA; however the 3,700 foot Bradshaw Air Field runway is inadequate to accommodate large transport aircraft such as the Air Force C-141's. The physiography of Pohakuloa is deceptive in terms of training suitability. Almost the entire site is level or gently sloping, uninhabited, and having few trees or deep gullies to inhibit training. Nevertheless, a large percent of it is almost completely unusable for maneuvers due to the rough lava flows that occur over much of the surface area. There are several geological features within the installation. Cinder cone hills or puu's, products of the latest eruptive activity on Mauna Kea, are found in the northern part of the installation and are surrounded by more recent lava flows from Mauna Loa. These recent flows (less than 200 years) are the most notable features of the central and southern landscape and together with the northern flows cover approximately 30% of the training area. Recent lava flows surround and contrast with islands of vegetation call kipukas. The two types of lava found throughout Hawaii, pahoehoe and 'a'a, are present at PTA as well. The pahoehoe flows have smooth undulating surfaces and can be traversed on foot for short distances. The rough 'a'a, however, are jagged, slag-like piles of impassable material. As the largest training area in Hawaii, Pohakuloa can be used to accomplish nearly all of the varying types of training required by the military forces. PTA has a 51,000 acre impact area which is over 10 times the size of the one at Schofield Barracks. There are approximately 32,000 acres free of recent lava flows and are considered fully usable for large maneuver exercises. Learn More About Pohakuloa Training Area HERE!! Impaired Judgment
June 19, 2018
Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
Matthew 7:1
Ive been quick to judge anyone I saw walking in the street while staring at a phone. How could they be so oblivious to the cars about to hit them? Ive told myself. Dont they care about their own safety? But one day, while crossing the entrance to an alleyway, I was so engrossed in a text message, that I missed seeing a car at my left. Thankfully, the driver saw me and came to an abrupt stop. But I felt ashamed. All of my self-righteous finger-pointing came back to haunt me. I had judged others, only to do the same thing myself.
My hypocrisy is the kind of thinking that Jesus addressed in the Sermon on the Mount: First take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brothers eye (Matthew 7:5). I had a huge planka blind spot through which I judged others with my own impaired judgment.
For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, Jesus also said (7:2). Recalling the disgusted look on the drivers face that day, after having to make an abrupt stop when I walked in front of the car, Im reminded of the disgusted looks I gave others engrossed in their phones.
None of us is perfect. But sometimes I forget that in my haste to judge others. Were all in need of Gods grace.
Heavenly Father, please help me be quicker to console or encourage, and slower to judge someone else.
In todays reading we see our Lords condemnation of a judgmental attitude. Its remarkable how we can have a perfectionistic attitude toward others yet ignore the glaring faults we possess. The Pharisees of Jesus day were scathing in their attack on the sins of others while seemingly unaware of their own faults. In seeing the pretense of these hypocrites, Jesus gave a series of rebukes such as: Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. Blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and dish, and then the outside also will be clean (Matthew 23:2526).
The Greek word hypocrite means he that wears the mask and was used of actors in plays. The private lives of hypocrites do not match the image they project for public view. The Christian walk should lead to greater integrity and transparency. To avoid hypocrisy, its essential that we confess our sin and rely on the Spirit to help us live holy lives (Galatians 5:16; Ephesians 5:18; 1 John 1:9).
In what ways can you become more gracious in your response to the behavior of others?

I spent 20 minutes on a deck at the airport as many flights had run the fuel trucks behind schedule. Soon we were back on the steaming aluminum tube on the way to Viet Nam. Only the married were allowed to take R&R there as it was closer to home.

Someone forgot to tell the USMC that when we were there. They just told us we would all get a new set of utilities and *shockingly* for the USMC, a new pair of boots after it was over. The USMC giving you boots when they don’t have to...
At the end of the exercise, uniforms were ripped, and the boots were chewed up and looked like suede. And there were more than a few twisted ankles. Garand clips were everywhere out there. And the place has duds all over.
You are in Hawaii, but you couldn’t tell it from Socorro New Mexico.

They have some really nice looking ranges there. Wish they would allow civilian use them during low training activity times.
Whole island does not have a civilian shooting range, as big as it is and with all that empty space.

Howdy, LUV.
Yep, it’s still roasty toasty here. It was 93 when I took Suvi to the vet this afternoon but the heat index was much hotter than that. Thought we might get a shower this afternoon but nothing ever blew up here. Drat!
I’ll need to water the flowers Dad sent a few years ago later tonight. They’re getting desperate.
Good to know you’re getting a little break though 90 sounds plenty hot. LOL

PS....Just saw a little video from Civil Beat and they are now setting up a new location. Not as close as the other one, but they do have permission to be there. Yay! I look forward to seeing their live streams.

Hiya radu!
We had a blast, just hanging out together was fun.
And we did eat a lot and I was very impressed by the German menus, very authentic and tasted like I remember from my time there, very generous portions too. Son loved the food.
We stayed at a hotel outside of town, much cheaper there, had a hearty breakfast at a nearby restaurant this morning and got back into town about noon today.
Fun stuff, how wuz your day?

They were live a few minutes ago but just went back off. I had it up but wasn’t listening. I have the hearing from this afternoon on since I missed most of it having to take Suvi to the vet.
He’s pretty far off from Big Daddy 8 but that’s what the cam is aimed at. In chat it says it’ll be live at 11 a.m. tomorrow, local time.

Glad y’all had such a good time yesterday. Sounds like you won’t need to eat again for a couple of days. LOL
I thought I’d have a day of recuperation from the work I did around here while Hubby was gone but that didn’t happen. Had to make a run to the vet with Suvi to stop her constant vomiting, poor lil thing. She’s doing much better now so it was worth the trip but I sure didn’t feel up to going anywhere.
