Inside the Former Walmart That Is Now a Shelter for Almost 1,500 Migrant Children
New York Times ^ | June 14, 2018 | Manny Fernandez

BROWNSVILLE, Tex. — In the loading docks, children sat in a darkened auditorium watching the animated movie “Moana.”

Where there were once racks of clothes and aisles of appliances, there were now spotless dorm-style bedrooms with neatly made beds and Pokemon posters on the walls. The back parking lots were now makeshift soccer fields and volleyball courts. The McDonald’s was now the cafeteria. All this made it difficult to visualize what the sprawling facility used to be — a former Walmart Supercenter.

The converted retail store at the southern tip of Texas has become the largest licensed migrant children’s shelter in the country — a warehouse for nearly 1,500 boys aged 10 to 17 who were caught illegally crossing the border.

The teeming, 250,000-square-foot facility is a model of border life in Trump-era America, part of a growing industry of detention centers and shelters as federal authorities scramble to comply with the president’s order to end “catch and release” of migrants illegally entering the country. Now that children are often being separated from their parents, this facility has had to obtain a waiver from the state to expand its capacity.

Cots are being added to sleeping areas. The staff is expanding. But even that is not enough. Federal authorities are considering establishing tent cities on Army and Air Force bases, and have already transferred hundreds of immigrant detainees to temporary housing at federal prisons.

On Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that temporary tent housing would be set up near the border station in Tornillo, Tex., to house up to 360 youths. That prompted an angry response from a Democratic state senator, José Rodríguez, who noted that temperatures could be expected to exceed 100 degrees at the site.

They are being treated pretty well, especially considering they are not supposed to be in the country to begin with.

It does get very hot in Texas in the summer. Does the government provide free air conditioning to legal Texas residents in the summer? If not, why do illegal aliens deserve better?

Well, at least we know it wasn’t used as a FEMA re-education camp... Yet.

They are Mexicans. They come from a place where temperatures like this are normal.

How many of those kids are ACTUALLY children of those who sneak into the U.S. illegally? Why not just deport the whole bunch immediately? Let the country the illegals cross from pay for their return?

Great rhetorical question.

We know the answer. :(

They join the millions of Mexican children that Texas taxpayers have been forced by the Supreme Court to feed, shelter, try to educate, and in the case of thousands of them, incarcerate since the 1980s.

The Federal government fails to do its basic Constitutional duty of maintaining a secure border, and Texans have been paying the price in billions of dollars and thousands of lives ruined or lost because illegal aliens are allowed to break US laws. We are sick of it.

Just went over to NYT page to read the article. Scrolled all posted articles. It is amazing the political slant of every single article. Everything in the NYT is anti Trump, with a vengeance. This is not a newspaper. It is a propaganda sheet.

It’s terrible that democrats do everything they can to encourage and assist kids in illegally crossing the border and ending up in places like this.

I have to put a fence around my swimming pool because it’s an “attractive nuisance”. Seems like the same thing applies to our country - if kids (and parents) are stupid we should make sure we keep them away from a bad situation.

I agree deport then all. But separating the children from parents and even humanely incarcerating them is wrong. The children technically comprise an ethnic group. Find the parents and get them all out of here.

I am pretty sure that whatever heat is in Texas is the same heat that is in Mexico. Trying to treat these kids like hothouse flowers is just plain stupid.

The harsh reality is that most Americans do not want these migrants entering and remaining in their country. Either you have borders and a distinct culture or you don’t. The Democratic Socialists are globalists and prefer that there be no borders or distinct American culture.
