Following a string of burglaries in the neighborhood, the residents of the 2800 block of La Canada Street in Las Vegas were on high alert. Thats why, when two suspicious characters were seen lurking around, the police were quickly called.
The situation escalated, however, when the two men in question began prying their way into a mans home. The home owner grabbed his gun and fired, killing one of the burglars while the second man fled (and hasnt been found).
Police are sending the case to the DAs office, but theyre not expecting any charges to be filed against the home owner. The victims neighbors, on the other hand, are critical.
Heres what one of the neighbors, Elizabeth Cannon, said when interviewed:
Shooting him in the foot would have been a better idea. He has the right to defend his property, but not in the way of murdering someone.
Another neighbor, Oscar Rodriguez, echoed that sentiment:
If he felt he was in danger I guess he has the right to [shoot], Rodriguez said. But I would shoot him in the leg to keep him alive then call police.
As weve discussed, shooting to wound is a tactic that probably shouldnt even be used in the movies, let alone real life. Aiming at anything other than center mass is far more difficult, which increases the likelihood of missing and thereby (1) failing to stop the threat, and/or (2) hitting an innocent bystander. Even if you do succeed in hitting an aggressors leg or foot, that wound is less likely to immobilize him. This puts you in serious danger of continued aggression and retaliation. The object is to stop the threat.
So, this burglary victims neighbors would have preferred him to deliberately risk his own life, and possibly theirs, rather than the lives of the guys who were forcibly entering his house.
Free Tony Martin! Oh, that's right, he's outta jail now.
Just to make the neighbor happy, I guess she could have gone back and shot him in the foot.
Are you from San Francisco, by any chance?
What the h-e-double-matchsticks is that?
Nathan Fillion but it was CASTLE, before IT went south, not FIREFLY.
YES!!! Shoot COM until the threat(s) have been stopped.
If you need to shoot, shoot to kill
I think it may have been both.
I googled a little and my memory was off — I think the Captain (Nathan Fillion) was about to be killed, but Jayne shot the bad guy (in the leg). Captain Reynolds says Nice Shot and Jayne says “I was aiming at his head”.
I never watched “Castle” but there were a lot of call-backs to Firefly in Castle and I think this bit showed up in Castle as one of those references.
Also, apparently, there was a 1970s British sci-fi show called “Blake’s 7” which originates this sort of exchange.
Sheeeeeeit!!! A double tap with one pull of the trigger!
I would put a big sign at the entry of the neighborhood advertising that “they already dispatched one burglar. Want to be next?”.
Idiots abound.
these days the gangters are wearing armor....so....center mass for diversion then several in the nuts for effect...and one in the head to shut them up.?
Be a good shot and get 2 with one shot.
No, but thank you for asking.
I believe life is preferable to death. Dont you?
Most people (myself included) can't shoot like Quigley Down Under on the range, let alone under stress. The homeowner did fine.
LOL!
I do not consider that preferable to shooting them.
Shooting them, while they are still a threat is legitimate self defense.
Harming them after having restrained them is a crime.
You're making a hero out of a rapist ... and your excuse for doing so is that he committed rape. That tells me everything I need to know about you.
So I can’t shoot the gun out of his hand?
