Burglary Victim’s Clueless Neighbors Say ‘He Should’ve Shot Him in the Foot’
The Truth About Guns ^ | 06/15/18

Posted on 06/15/2018 11:57:18 AM PDT by Simon Green

Following a string of burglaries in the neighborhood, the residents of the 2800 block of La Canada Street in Las Vegas were on high alert. That’s why, when two suspicious characters were seen lurking around, the police were quickly called.

The situation escalated, however, when the two men in question began prying their way into a man’s home. The home owner grabbed his gun and fired, killing one of the burglars while the second man fled (and hasn’t been found).

Police are sending the case to the DA’s office, but they’re not expecting any charges to be filed against the home owner. The victim’s neighbors, on the other hand, are critical.

Here’s what one of the neighbors, Elizabeth Cannon, said when interviewed:

“Shooting him in the foot would have been a better idea. He has the right to defend his property, but not in the way of murdering someone.”

Another neighbor, Oscar Rodriguez, echoed that sentiment:

“If he felt he was in danger I guess he has the right to [shoot],” Rodriguez said. “But I would shoot him in the leg to keep him alive then call police.”

As we’ve discussed, “shooting to wound” is a tactic that probably shouldn’t even be used in the movies, let alone real life. Aiming at anything other than center mass is far more difficult, which increases the likelihood of missing and thereby (1) failing to stop the threat, and/or (2) hitting an innocent bystander. Even if you do succeed in hitting an aggressor’s leg or foot, that wound is less likely to immobilize him. This puts you in serious danger of continued aggression and retaliation. The object is to stop the threat.

So, this burglary victim’s neighbors would have preferred him to deliberately risk his own life, and possibly theirs, rather than the lives of the guys who were forcibly entering his house.

If you shoot them in the leg and sever the artery, they’re dead.

I think you should try to shoot off all their fingers (well, at least 6 of them since nobody needs more than a revolver). That way they’re still alive but can’t grab at you.

Tie them up and bugger them until they scream and you get FReepers calling for your death:

What if it's a five shot revolver? What then?

Saw a crime show where some woman shot at an intruder 5 times and missed him. He then murdered her. Take your best shot or die trying.

A gut shot which empties their lower intestine into the bloodstream might be ideal to give them a couple of days to prepare to meet their maker. But I'm not going to judge someone who is firing under stress. Besides, the perp could end up lingering for several days, consuming scarce public health resources and sticking the taxpayer with a bigger bill.

The homeowner did the right thing. It is just too bad one got away.

See Exodus 22:2

Get a S&W Model 617. It's a ten shot revolver.

Granted, it's only a .22...but that's enough for fingers.

It's not the property or the money, it's a HOME INVASION and the home owner has no way of knowing exactly how dangerous the invaders are.
The burglars know damn well they're not supposed to be there.
Shoot to kill is a perfectly reasonable response.

It’s better to go into court against a corpse than a cripple.
It will always be your word against his.

Shoot ‘em in the eyes and they can’t see to attack you.

Or, shoot ‘em through the ear hole. Then they can’t hear you as you sneak up on ‘em with a baseball bat.

I forget the precise outcome but on “Firefly”, the Captain at one point basically shoots a gun out of a bad guy’s hand (or some such amazing feat).

The Captain’s crewmate says, “Nice shot!”

The captain replies: “I was aiming for his head.”

When in fear for your life your adrenaline is pumping.

Adrenaline has positive effects on large muscle groups(legs) and negative effects on small muscle groups(hands). Which do you shoot with legs or hands.

Center mass.

Years ago a teen was shot on Chicago’s lake front who he pointed a BB gun at the police.

My classmates in medical school could not understand why “didn’t the police shot the gun out of his hand?”

Seriously these people were intelligent and yet ignorant.

The situation escalated, however, when the two men in question began prying their way into a man’s home.

I believe Nevada's Castle Doctrine allows you to shoot someone trying to break into your home - when you are in the home. Unless there are other circumstances that dictate otherwise, the home owner should not be charged in this case.
