Use of the E-ZPass electronic payment system has grown exponentially across the Washington region in recent years as the network of toll lanes has expanded in the Interstate 95 corridor with new facilities from Stafford County to just north of Baltimore.
Both Maryland and Virginia are actively promoting E-ZPass, hoping to reduce cash payment at toll plazas where the option exists and to encourage the seamless use of all-electronic toll facilities such as the 495 Express Lanes and 66 Express Lanes in Virginia and the Intercounty Connector in Maryland.
In that spirit, Maryland announced last week that it is making E-ZPass transponders free, eliminating the $7.50 sign-up fee and betting on a greater number of drivers going cashless at the states eight toll facilities, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The change, however, did not apply to specialized transponders such as the E-ZPass Flex, which is in high demand among drivers who carpool regularly and use Northern Virginias High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes such as the 495 and 95 Express Lanes.
Maryland doesnt have HOT lanes, which explains why the state isnt pushing E-ZPass Flex sales, nor is it reducing the cost for the transponder. However, John Sales, a spokesman for the Maryland Transportation Authority, said the state makes the Flex transponders available to E-ZPass Maryland customers who wish to use them in Northern Virginia for $16.50.
That means Maryland residents who regularly commute across state lines might still choose to get their Flex transponder in Virginia, where both the regular and Flex transponders are free. Virginia also has made it easy for nonresidents to obtain a Virginia E-ZPass by partnering with AAA stores and other retailers to make the devices available outside the state.

Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Go to youtube and search E-Zpass tracking.
But hey, it speeds passing through tollbooths.
Hard not to if you travel much. Lots of areas, such as Boston, have removed toll-booths, which make them mandatory to use the roads, else you get bill/penalty in the mail.
As if cameras couldn’t go up on freeways too for that purpose. The law generally goes, that if you can see it in public, it’s okay for the government to note it too.
Those pylons and traffic boxes popping up around cities are keeping track of your every turn and stop.
That’s my point... it’s all over the place anyhow. Tolling systems are simply monetizing it.
And I know... paranoia.
The best way is to get the kind of government that you don’t care if it knows where you have gone.
License plate readers mean that they can track you even without the EZPass RFID device (assuming it’s the ‘sticker with a chip’ modern device used in Texas and midwest tollways). There’s no significant difference at this point.
Ed pass signs in Virginia stink. You an get killed just trying to read one at 60. Mph and they don’t care.
Left Md in ‘75, it was going down the tubes then. You get the kind of government you vote for.
Info from I-Pass was used in a divorce case in Illinois. Ex-wife’s lawyer used the I-Pass tracking to prove Husband was not where he said he was.

Yep, the days of driving without being tracked are OVER. The only remaining question is what is done with the data? Who has access to it? You boss, political opponent, wife, ex, lawyer, her lawyer, etc.? And for how long?
And does anyone even care?
Don’t have any idea if this is true, but had a dump truck driver tell me that he has a 4” diamond plate border around his tag and he shines & polishes every morning and the cameras can’t get a picture due to the glare?
Wouldn’t that be something!!!
“Ex-wifes lawyer”
Imagine if it were a murder case - say an innocent husband reports death and tells cops at the scene where he was, etc..
But, oops, made a mistake in the details and cops find out thanks to nazi-pass.
Now they can charge him with lying to the police. If they exhaust all other leads, they might even be able to use that “lie” to get a murder conviction.
This is BS. Why have we been paying taxes on gasoline at the pump for decades?? What have they done with this money?? Sure as hell not filling pot holes.
Best results from my college days. Met my wife of 43 years, got commissioned in the army, moved out of MD. Only reason I visit is family and friends still live there but I rarely go back.
We went last week for crab cakes and soft shelled crabs
