You're still not addressing the question. I reiterate:
In your world, are students limited to reading only books which are on the officially sanctioned Reading List?

For a school assignment, and credit, yes, students must choose from the reading lists.
On their own, they can read anything they wish.

For a school assignment, and credit, yes, students must choose from the reading lists. Right. And the officially sanctioned reading lists represent what our representatives and employees, the government school officials, deem important. They represent the guidance that teachers are supposed to give their students.
And those reading lists include rubbish, such as the "auto"biography of Malcolm Little.

Alex Haleys The Autobiography of Malcolm X is not all that radical as it is not uncommon to find it on a high school reading list.
Is this sarcasm? Haley's work is outrageous and it has been almost completely discredited. (to wit: "ROOTS," aven the manuscript stolen... And he lost the lawsuit!) Haley, like the father of Kwanzaa Ron Karenga (a gang-rapist and convicted torturer of woman), symbolizes all that is despicable, "radical," and largely invented about "African American Studies." Wanna puke? They made a museum out of it. Have a look around.

Why would a book written by someone else be considered an autobiography?
Egads! Check your privilege, good sir, lest ye offend!

It’s on some school’s Reading Lists.
I don’t make the reading lists.
