Trump's tariff on Canadian newsprint is killing US newspapers, Republicans warn
Washington Examiner ^ | 06/08/2018 | Pete Kasperowicz

A dozen House lawmakers have introduced legislation to remove President Trump's tariffs on Canadian newsprint so a study can be done on how much those tariffs are crushing local newspapers around the country.

The bill, introduced by Rep. Kristi Noem, R-S.D., is a response to the 22 percent tariff that the Trump administration has imposed on some Canadian newsprint since the beginning of this year. Noem said that tariff has led to rising costs for local newspapers, and are a threat to their survival.

"In recent years, new tariffs on Canadian newsprint have increased paper prices by 20 to 30 percent," Noem said in a statement. "That's significant. A paper that services around 20,000 customers, for instance, could see paper costs rise by about a quarter-million dollars annually, threatening the newspaper's survival."

I think they are mainly complaining about the small town papers not the big players...

"Tariffs increase the prices of imported goods. Because of this, domestic producers are not forced to reduce their prices from increased competition, and domestic consumers are left paying higher prices as a result."

"Tariffs is also a policy tool to protect domestic industries by changing the conditions under which goods compete in such a way that competitive imports are placed at a disadvantage."

Idiot! That's not what's killing newspapers.

But anything that POTUS does to hasten their demise is WINNING to me.

I don’t know about the merits of the first part of the headline, but the second part is welcome.

In 1982-85, I worked in a USA company’s Canadian office.

One of my first big surprises was the level of environmental standards vs my home country mills.

The reason given was create jobs first and environment second. ft

Noem represents South Dakota, a state with many small town newspapers and almost no forestry jobs which benefit from selling wood chips and pulp. Some of the newspapers actually practive journalism in flyover America.

She is thinking localized and tactical while Trump is thinking international and strategic. IOW, change all these stupid multinational America last trade agreements to logical bilateral trade agreements which benefit both partners.

My wife just said almost the same thing. They still have newspapers in SD and large rural areas that don't have good access to digital media. Dial-up and DSL isn't as dependable for them as black and white and red allover newsprint.

I am pretty sure newspapers are killing newspapers. They are like, 20 years or so late on something called the internet.

The Trump tariff costs about eight cents per pound of paper I believe.

Canadian trees are well positioned to suck C02 out of the air that might melt polar ice.

Long may those trees live and grow.

It’s unfortunate for the people who work in the attendant jobs, such as the printers, the ad sales people, the delivery people, and the like.

“Why don’t these newspapers use RECYCLED paper?”

Right, they could come with the fish guts already on them.

Trump apparently believes that if he just puts a tariff on something, domestic production of it will magically begin. That’s not the way it works.

Yep. That, plus it is hard to wrap trash, clean up dog$#*+ or swat flies with a computer monitor, LOL!

Some of your best editorial writing in the country comes out of these flyover country rural newspapers. I kid you not. You can even look up some of these papers on-line.

There is a huge misconception that a lot of people in such areas just aren't very bright. The reality is that many of them have been successful elsewhere and chose to unplug because they see where much of the rest of the world is headed.

Horse poop. Newspapers are dying because they are full of leftist stink and people can use other things for their hamster cages.
