Or, do the opposite.

Name them, make them open to public abuse, shaming and humiliation.

There’s a reason public pillories were used in the past.

Rather than living in their own fantasy world, shut off from the public and served by Federal corrections officials, people like Dylan Cruz would think many times before committing their acts if they knew public humiliation awaited them.

You miss the point.

That’s exactly why they do it: to bask in the glow of public notoriety.

Its like oxygen to criminals. You do it not only for the money or the gratification but the thrill of being at the center of public attention.

Crime is worth that to some people.

Sure there is. It won’t deter anybody. Those who want to spill blood want to spill blood. Look at all the suicide bombers in the Mid East. They don’t get a bunch of press coverage, they still blow themselves and other people up. Some might want infamy, but what they want most is to kill.

>> The public has a right to know his identity.

Yeah, OK, BUT... the media doesn’t have to make him a hero to all the nuts who say “yeah, I could do that - I’d be famous!”

Do you remember the photo of General Nguyen Ngoc Loan Executing a Viet Cong Prisoner in 1968? That would bring more clarity to the nut boys in waiting than the media incessantly digging around to get sympathy for them.

They do get lionized in their own media and society where terrorists are celebrated as role models.

My point holds: evil needs to get affirmation to be copied by others. Otherwise evil wouldn’t spread to the extent that it does.

You have no point. Evil does NOT need affirmation. It’s estimated we’ve got over 100 serial killers running around in this country right now, none of them are getting any press. Evil spreads just fine without coverage.

Its the 24/7 microanalyzing by the ratings only creeps. The crazy people see that and they try to do the same evil deed...cuz they are mentally ill. Stop feeding the mentally ill with ideas. Mind control works with constant repetition of ads...why not with 24/7 reporting of horrific crimes.

And just where in the Constitution is this so-called “right to know”?

The right to know is fine. But the right to be plastered all over the news for two weeks is something we can give up. The media is not doing this for the right to know. They are selling soap while playing up every detail of the event. And of course teaching the next crazy how to get attention.

After a week, all I’ve heard about the Middle School shooter near me in IN is that he was 13 years old.

Suppressing their identification is the worst thing we could do. It’s the first step to suppressing freedom of the press.
You have a point. OTOH the famous
KTVU Reports Asiana Air Pilots Were “Sum Ting Wong” and “Ho Lee Fuk”
is actually a parody of the fatuity of breathlessly reporting the names of people involved in an incident as if the specific names actually mattered to anyone not related to them. The link used to include the actual video, which was hilarious. The names were wrong, and in a real sense it was a sin. But the video was hilarious because it was a con pulled off on people ("the MSM”) who take themselves and their oh-so-significant work to be “as serious as a heart attack.”

And IMHO the same principle applies to berserkers who want to “set a record” and make a name (no matter how or what kind of name) for themselves. Their names actually do not matter. Why they perpetrated their crimes - and who enabled them, passively or actively, matters.

I don’t care what the name is of the berserker who shot Steve Scalise. I do care that he was a Democrat, and I do care that Democrats be embarrassed at the association. And that he does not walk. But his name? His name is excrement.

I don’t mean his name or background, I am talking about the videos where he is bragging, they can report the video but don’t show it.

There are people that actually share these sick brags.

If we lived in a era of responsible journalism, you would be 100% right.

The Asiana case of needing to get the scoop in a time period measured in minutes is one proof that responsible journalism no longer exists. The other extremes are the cases of muslim names where the “identity of the shooter is unknown” for days, but when the shooter has a clearly western name, we know about the time he pulled a girl’s pigtails in 2nd grade while the bodies are still warm.

The name does matter for the first 24 hours. Then, we can scrub it from our collective consciousness.

We do have a right to know but the media must refrain from making these guys famous.I'm convinced in creates copycats.

Perhaps name the person on Govt website only....or allow media use of name for 18 hours at which time the perp becomes known as the "2017 Las Vegas killer " or the "'18 Parkland school murderer."

Obviously, no mug shots. No need ever for those.

The media knows so many people lust after salacious news.

To just name the shooter of a mass shooting - O.K. the shooter is identified - might be enough “news”, but instead we get 24/7 coverage of the shooting & the shooter & all the politics claiming one thing or another surrounding the event, for weeks on end; and voila the shooter is mass famous.

Give name one time. No picture. No interviews with neighbors who say “he was such a nice, quiet boy.” No publication of manifesto. No publication of Facebook postings.
