This Factory Was Ready to Expand. Then Came the Trump Trade Wars.

Andy Marsh’s New York factory is trapped in the Trump trade wars.

As Mr. Trump threatens tariffs on America’s economic allies and its adversaries, many of the domestic businesses that the president says his policies are meant to protect are finding themselves victims of his aggressive approach.

Prices are rising for imported goods, other nations are erecting retaliatory trade barriers, and companies like Plug Power, the manufacturing business that Mr. Marsh runs outside Albany, are facing crippling uncertainty from Mr. Trump’s fickle approach.

It is not the first time Mr. Marsh has felt firsthand the impact of decisions made hundreds of miles away in Washington.

In February, Congress and Mr. Trump gave Plug Power an injection of optimism, by extending a tax credit that was crucial to the manufacturer’s American expansion plans. The credit allowed Plug Power to reduce the price of its fuel cells for trucks and forklifts, and to forge ahead with new hiring.

By May, Mr. Marsh had slowed his efforts to fill more than 10 open positions in Plug Power’s factory as he began worrying that the tariffs on steel and some Chinese products crucial to its business would raise the costs of the components it imports to build fuel cells. So executives had raised the price on their fuel cells, and sales were slowing as a result.

United States Customs and Border Protection had also begun delaying some of those imported components for several days after they arrived from overseas, slowing their trip to Plug Power’s factory floor, Mr. Marsh said. The reason for the delay was unclear, but Mr. Marsh suspected that it could be related to the recent trade upheaval.

Other American companies, such as Ford, have faced delays with their products in China, as customs officials subjected their exports to additional scrutiny

And I suppose this is why unemployment is so high and the economy is totally tanking? No?

With those great job numbers, I figured the MSM would look for a way to spin their reporting of the economy in a negative light. It looks like they found it.

Trade wars? Sometimes you have to fight in order to win. One sided trade deals negotiated to “help” our supposed allies and enhance political objectives such as “world trade” and globalism hurt America and need to be scrapped. Free trade is great only if it is fair.

We got a tax credit from the government, so let’s raise prices to maximize our profits.

The NYT had to dig pretty hard to find this story.

So let me get this straight. The tariffs have not actually gone in place. The business owner, acting on his "worrying" about something that hasn't raised the price of the components he buys, raised his prices? His sales slowed? No sh$t, probably because others that sell the same product didn't needlessly raise their prices.

Good job NYT, creating Fake News wherever you go - as long as you can say something bad about Trump and his policies - regardless of the truth.

Every war has casualties and trade wars are no different. The hope is that the gains outweigh the pain and that remains to be seen.

When will they report WHY Trump is imposing tariffs? Eorope charges sometimes 50% to 100% more for goods shipped to the US and for similar items we are charging zero extra. Its been like this for years. Trump is leveling the trade playing field. If they don’t like the tariffs, then stop overcharging us.

I disagree with you. But I'll give you a chance to explain why you believe its true. And please be as specific as your knowledge allows. Thanks...

In February, it [Plug Power] was poised to continue increasing its investment in the United States, thanks to a bipartisan bill that extends, then gradually phases out over time, a tax credit for fuel cells.

Live by the gov't, die by the gov't.

He loves regulation in the form of tax credits, but hates regulation in the form of tariffs.

I don’t buy it for a second. This is a Democrat seeking to blame Trump for their bad business.

trade means just that - an exchange of goods and services. I sell you this, I buy that. It's not a one-sided targeting of strategic industries using cheap labor to capture and monopolize key high value industries.

And, it isn't "trade" when the only thing you will take is a share in the ownership and governance of our country. Take cash to buy our goods, fine. Buying our intellectual property or buying our politicians so that you can steal our intellectual property, buying our companies and buying our real estate at a certain point crowds out US citizens.

It's gone on too long and the natives are out for the scalps of those who sell them out. Yours could be one of them.
