ROME (AFP) - Italy's new anti-establishment government took power on Friday, ending months of deadlock that saw the eurozone's third largest economy narrowly avoid snap elections after a last-gasp coalition deal.
New Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, 53, was sworn in at the head of the first populist government in an EU founding member that was forged by the Five Star Movement and the far-right League.
"The new right is in power," declared left-leaning daily La Repubblica.
The handover of power follows an inconclusive March election and months of political turmoil which had spooked global financial markets and spread unease among Italy's EU partners.
Reaction to the new government was wary, with concerns still running high about Italy's massive debt mountain and the future of the EU and its single currency.
The coalition -- which faces a parliamentary confidence motion early next week that it is set to win -- plans to boost public spending and wants to renegotiate EU treaties and review the bloc's economic governance.
Its proposals -- which include a monthly basic income for Italy's poorest and a two tier "flat" tax -- have worried Brussels and the financial markets given Italy's massive 2.3 trillion euro ($2.7 trillion) debt.
European powerhouse Germany vowed an "open" approach to Conte's team, while European Council president Donald Tusk said his appointment came at a "crucial time" for Italy and the European Union -- which is facing its own crisis with the departure of Britain.
European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker was more blunt -- saying Italians need to work harder, be less corrupt and stop blaming the EU for the problems of the country's poor south....

The markets in Italy reacted well to the new government after many had suggested a Five Star-League government would drive them down.
The Five Stars may be strong in the poor south, but the League is a party of the north of Italy, where the business and industry of Italy are centered.
This government balances things but as Nigel Farage posted on Twitter yesterday, the “bully boys” are going to be coming after them.

My guess is what pissed them off was the EU secular stuff. Not allowed to have crosses in classes is the only case that came up that I can recollect.
My parents parents fled the awful system of Italian laws and no justice. They haven’t changed in 120 years. There is rot all the way to the core over there. I don’t expect it to get better any time soon.
The source of this article are a bunch of French lefties. AFP views what took place not as a return to Italian sovereignty but as populism . What the hell is populism ? Here’s some examples. Smoking being forbidden in taverns. Implied consent traffic arrests. Mark Levin describes populism as mob rule and to a certain extent he’s right. California is a great example where the government utilizing populism which subsequently creates a burgeoning bureaucracy has created a nightmare of very costly regulations affecting every aspect of living enforced by a mob run by state bureaucrats .

Two years ago I sent two letters to Italy, Registered Mail, they never arrived. Great postal service they have.
The EU was a mistake from the start. It was created in order to wipe out the individual countries, and to create a kind of united states, in the American model.
The individual states would disappear, and a large “country” would take their place. All borders would be wiped out, and Christianity as a basis for social policy would be eliminated.
The EU flag always flies next to the national flags. Passports are entitled “European Union” first, then the name of the country.
The Italians have had enough of that. They are happy to be Italian, and don’t want to be subject to the whims of some euroweenie like jean-claude junker.

How is Jean Claude Juencker still around? Remember, this is the very same cvnt who proclaimed back in the early 1990’s that “this is not the hour of America, this is the hour of Europe” when discussing the war in Bosnia. Then the Yurps proceeded to sit on their asses and do nothing for years. Then OF COURSE, after screaming “you’ve got to do something!” for long enough, the US got dragged into it and quickly sorted the mess out.

As always his loudmouthed, arrogant, hamfisted bloviating trying to dictate to others does the EU far more harm than good. Yet the morons keep putting him in positions of leadership - 25 years or more now. Incredible.

On a side note, there is some truth to what he says but for a foreigner to say that is about THE stupidest thing imaginable. Of course Yurp elites think the lowly peasants should all just bow down. If anything they’re even worse than the worst of American elitist bicoastal cvnts.
You might want to do a little research on that. IIRC it is the country of origin that sets the postal rates. And they keep most of that money, other than some arcane int'l compensation scheme (UPU - Universal Postal Union). For example, if some country sets their rate for an airmail letter to the US at 2 cents, the USPO still has to deliver that letter at their end. Even if it's a loss to them. Perhaps that's not true for parcels, though. The point being, it might not be Italy that's at fault in your example...
