..India’s response to the Rohingya crisis next door has been hijacked by domestic identity politics, it has shied away from a major role in resolving the crisis that erupted last year when the Myanmar military forced some 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh.
India is attempting to deport the 40,000 Rohingya who have trickled in over the years. The Rohingya question has become entwined with anxieties about a growing Muslim population, fears of terrorism, and the fraught history of Kashmir.
Thus while much of the world sees the Rohingya as persecuted refugees, many Indians, especially supporters of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, view them as a threat. This constrains India’s ability to help. China has stepped in to mediate between Myanmar and Bangladesh.
India’s cold shoulder to the Rohingya marks a departure from its traditional approach toward its region’s huddled masses. In the 1950s, India embraced Tibetan Buddhists fleeing Maoist China, including, most famously, the Dalai Lama. In the 1970s, the Pakistan army’s scorched-earth campaign to thwart Bangladeshi independence forced 10 million refugees, Hindus and Muslims, into India. In the 1980s, thousands of Tamils escaping persecution in Sri Lanka boarded boats to India. A small number of Afghans moved to Delhi and other cities.
... So why is India treating the Rohingya differently? For starters, religious fault lines have deepened. According to Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director at Human Rights Watch, India sees the Rohingya “from a single obsessive prism—that they’re Muslim.” In an era of Hindu nationalism, this alone is enough to dry up sympathy.
...Indian liberal elites have hurt the Rohingya by tending to play down the violence associated with terrorist groups such as the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army.

from the article Last week Amnesty International accused ARSA fighters of murdering scores of Hindus in Myanmar last year. In one incident, the militants reportedly killed 53 Hindus execution-style, and spared eight women and their children only after they agreed to convert to Islam. Not surprisingly, foes of the Rohingya jumped on the Amnesty report to discredit the argument that India ought to treat the refugees kindly.
A little more compassion for the world's most persecuted minority? That slaughters people because they are not of the Muslim faith? That may let people survive if they undergo religious conversion "by the sword"?
Perhaps that sort of "minority" (just 1.6 billion people when all adherents to Islam are tallied) should be not just persecuted but prosecuted.
India is Smart not to let them in. I wouldn’t either. Let Bangladesh or Pakistan or one of the myriad of other Islamic countries take them in.
Fear?! How about experience?
Self and cultural defense against savage barbarians is Persecution if the savages are Moslem and only want to kill everybody who is not. We have to tolerate cultural differences, doncha know?!

Garbage article. They snub them because Islam has terrorized them at their borders. I worked with an Indian who spoke of Islamists poking and abusing cows (yes, she knew I am a rabid steak lover).
The difference... I eat steak, Islamists provoke people.
I found her Urdu and Arabic to sound similar for my comfort.
Given India’s LONG experience with Muslims, it is perhaps understandable that they don’t want any more.
"Good", in this sense, meaning Muslims capable of living in harmony with others. Some would call them apostate.
It is clear understanding of Islam that motivates the Indian response to pressure to let them in. They are an old and wise people.
There is no such people or ethnicity as ‘Rohingya.’ These are Bengali Muslims who illegally entered Myanmar, period. The entire fake controversy is a fraud, just like the fake “Palestinians,” who are nothing but Arabs, mostly Jordanians.

Justified. If you look in their book, you see that it commands them to kill humans. They actually take their book seriously and act on it. So yes, there is adequate reason to fear the death cult.
As well they should .. would that such perspicacity obtain world-wide.
When the British pulled out, India descended into Hindu-Muslim civil war resulting in between 1 and 2 million deaths, finally leading into the partition of India into what is now Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh. The Muslims of the new Pakistan engaged in ethnic cleansing of Hindus, resulting in over 7 million Hindus being expelled into India.
Indians have NO interest in letting this happen again. The whole current Kashmir mess shows what happens when you let the Muslim population become dominant.
Why didn’t they stay in Bangladesh? That’s 90% Moslem, and not as poor as when George Harrison was raising money for them. Bangladesh has 160,000,000 people, she wouldn’t even notice a settlement of 40,000 more.
islam is a plague on all civil societies.
