WARSAW, Poland (AP) A spokesman for Poland's Navy says that three Russian-made submarine signaling missiles have been found in recent days at different locations on Poland's Baltic Sea beaches.
Speaking from a from a Navy base in Gdynia, Cmdr. Radoslaw Pioch said Wednesday the missiles came from a submarine type Kilo, made in Russia. They were found at two locations on the Hel Peninsula and on the Sobieszewska Island, within the Bay of Gdansk area that borders Russia's Kaliningrad region with its military port.

When were they released from the Russian sub? How do they know the date, and what level of accuracy is that date?
If released offshore (missile ?) and drifted to shore (as with US style sonobouys) then what is the problem?
Maybe the sub sank or is in trouble and they used them as a SOS signal?........................
Could be. That would be worth looking into.
What does this mean? I wasn't a sailor.
“Signaling missiles are fired by emerging submarines when they want to mark their location.”
Strange.
What does this mean? I wasn't a sailor.
Submarines will sometimes release signals to acknowledge the beginning of an exercise or the end of an exercise. Sometime they'll release one if they are surfacing with ships around. It's not that unusual.
Thanks. I see now what is meant by “mark their location” now.
signaling missiles
????
WTF are those (never heard that term before)
Hint using online translator apps dont always work.
russian sensor buoys ?
My guess is that they mean FLARES.
Looks like there are only 2 Kilos in the Baltic fleet. Shouldn’t be too hard to track down.
Kilos are completely silent at 5 knots since being electrical diesel they can be stealthier than our nuke subs
Alan Arkin, call on line 2... .
you’ll put yer eye out kid...
OH MA GAWD ..... I actually rendered one of these safe in my EOD days. Got called out, looked at it and condoned off 3 city blocks, tied up police, EMS and fire. Had one of Airmen get the BBS-3 bomb suit on ..... told him I’d recon it while he was dressing out . He waddled down to it . Stopped, turned an looked at us like WTF ?. Signaled him to hit it with our Mk Duce dearmer. He came back , we made big noise with or Mk Duce. He waddled back down picked up the evil lawn dart and we left ...... told local PD we had to go destroy the rest of it on our range...... Twas a hoot !
Probably like our Mk 5 and Mark 6 signal flares.... pop open tabs on the side throw em in a torpedo tube or over the side or even dropped from helicopters or fixed wing. Soon as salt water gets in it activates a squib that fires off a very very very bright floating flare ........
So there are never airborne?
I understand more now.
They can be dropped from C-130’s or Helicopters during CSAR etcetera
